Golems (related - Robots, Androids) are one of the monsters found in OD&D. Golems come from Jewish folklore. They are automatons made from clay or mud. The word "robot" was coined by Czech writer Karl Czapek in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots). So, would the difference between a Golem and Living Statue be that the Golem is more of a Construct, whereas the Living Statue is an existing, originally inanimate object given supernatural life? Do golems have Intelligence or are they mindless drones with no comprehension or understanding? The classic Frankensteins' monster was a golem of sorts. Here is a link I just found regarding a golem legend: Legend of the GolemAnd another, from University of Pittsburgh: The GolemOdd how one attributes the legend to Czech and the other to Germany... This from The Jewish Magazine at www.jewishmag.com GolemThe word golem comes from the Hebrew word gelem, meaning raw material. The golem is outwardly a real person, yet he lacks the human dimension of personality and intellect. Life is interjected into him through a mystical process using God's special name. He is created from the ground, as was the first man. When his mission is over, the name of God is removed from him and he returns to the ground.
