In Greek myth, Medusa was a unique individual one of three sisters who were Gorgons. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GorgonIt's interesting to me that, in the original D&D description, a medusa is depicted as having a human female's face, arms and breasts, but the lower body of a snake with of couse the asps-for-hair. After this, they are seen in the way of simply being snake-haired women. One depiction I recall from Greek mythology of gorgons was they had piggish snouts, snakes for hair, huge tusks and dragon-like bodies. It should be noted that D&D's gorgon is based on a medieval bestiary, and not Greek mythology!

What I find interesting about the Medusa is the fact that she can turn the PC's to stone just with her gaze. Gorgons in myth had snakes for hair, a horn protruding from their faces, a suggestion that their breath was so putrid it was poison , skin covered in scale of bronze and of course meeting their gaze turned one into stone.
