So here is how I currently have magic users spell memorization work. I tried to add a bit more Vance to mine. The magic user has less spells per day then a normal by the book, but they can access higher level spells
Spells — A magic user can memorize “compartments in the brain where the magician impresses spells” a number equal to his level plus one. So a first level magic user has two, while a sixth level magic user has seven. Each spell he chooses to memorize takes up one of the magic users memorization slots. Straightforward spell (levels 1-2) take one of his slots while, Complex spells (levels 3-6) take up two per spell. No spell can be memorized multiple times.
Minor Magics – Cantraps Cantraps, also know as cantrips, are minor spells with minimal effects that magic users can cast. Cantraps can be cast as many times per day as the magic user would like as long as he has at least one spell memorized. When casting these spells the magic users slowly siphons off a little power from a memorized spell in order to power these minor magics. Once he has cast all memorized spells he has no more spell energy to power his cantrips.
Starting Spell Book — A magic-user begins with the read magic spell and two other spells of 1st and 2nd level, players choice. He also begins with two spells of 3rd or 4th level and one of 5th-6th level, these spells are randomly determined by the referee.

Never seen anything like this yet. I'm kinda stoked about this. I think I'd try to limit the 5th and 6th level spells by making them take 3 slots... Just to keep them a tad out of reach. Having a 1st level M-U with access to those, particularly some of the mass combat style spells, kinda worries me. But this is a neat system! Geez, is something in the water here? Two really great, really simple alternate spell systems (See Fin's also) in as many days??? I'm gonna toss you an exalt for this tomorrow when I'm on my full computer, man (can't now, on my phone)

A magic user can memorize “compartments in the brain where the magician impresses spells” a number equal to his level plus one. One spell per level is simpler, and matches up with the stories. Mazirian the (6th level MU), can hold 6 spells in his brain. And I don't distinguish by spell level for memorization purposes, so acquiring spells is arguably more important that going up levels.

Funny you should mention that I do have two version I'm play testing one is a spell only takes one slot no matter the level and one slot per level. I'm play testing both seeing which works about more intuitive for the players. I will probably use the one slot per level and one slot per spell no matter the level, as that is more in line with the stories.
