Zombies are a lot of fun. I have tweaked mine based on the movies and TV. They vary by speed of movement and aggressiveness. They require a skull puncture to take them down, other damage will slow but not stop them. Also they tend to come in waves.

The word "zombie" comes from Hatti Voodoo. Apparently, there is some evidence that real Voodoo zombies actually do exist even today, but of course they are not actual undead.
According to Voodoo belief, a zombie is in fact an undead person brought back from the grave to serve as a slave. In reality, if zombies really do exist, they are living people who are first put into a comatose state that resembles death, burried, and then are later extracted from their grave. They are partially revived, but still held in a trance-like state similar to hypnosis in which they are highly succeptible to suggestion. Because the rest of the community believes the person to be dead, the Bokor (sorcerer) is free to enslave the zombie victim. All of this is accomplished through the administration of a powerful toxin of unknown composition (although pufferfish toxin is a main ingredient).
Check out Eden Studios' All Flesh Must Be Eaten horror survivalist RPG for an excellent history and bibliography on all things zombie! It ties current zombie terms with everything from Hollywood to the original vampires of mythology.

Zombies are great fun! I've always enjoyed watching zombie movies, and I think using them is a good way of incorporating some horror element into fantasy.

Mechanically, how do you run a Romero style zombie? Honest question -- I have some ideas, but I would like to hear from you guys first...

"darn zombies again -- everyone grab their salt shakers." A different trope for zombie films. ? Also, the AC should be 9/5 -- it was too hard to flat out kill a zombie with the original AC.

Zombies seem to have a rudimentary group mind with one interest: turning mammalian life to zombie-life (they're not interested in reptiles, amphibians, or fish). Outbreaks are rumored to begin with the burial of a unworthy priest in hallowed ground. Human zombies behave as zombies with the exception that if the zombie is caught, tied up, and questioned, the original personality can be contacted, regardless of state of decay. It behaves as if roused from the deep end of moderate sedation and may perceive the zombie-activity to be a dream. Communicates, but somewhat unwillingly, as long as articulatory apparatus or hands still work. The original personality will not keep the channel of communication open, but remains active as long as questioning is pursued by the captors.
It is unknown whether a cure can be effected. Some wizards suspect that powerful magic, judiciously applied, could rescue the soul of a zombie from its undead shell. Telepathic contact with the zombie mind has never been attempted.

Only a natural 20 with kill it out right, otherwise you have to chop it to bits; but once it hits 0 HP it is dead (you caved in it's brain pan).
BUT that is the NORMAL Zombie; now take the Deadworld comic inspired Intelligent Zombie possessed by a demonic spirit you are screwed - I still have to stat it up; plus the demonic Grakken.
