These are all manner of real world land, sea and flying creatures provided as a list that can be used to flavor your world or as a jumping off point to create unique creatures to flavor your world with. A few mentions thrown in from time to time give depth and gravity to your world. Noting that you see the following tracks as you walk or ride along or you see a flock of such and such birds etc. quickly adds to the atmosphere that you are trying to create and makes your world more "real". You can also use this list for many other purposes in your campaign.
This list cannot be nor is it intended to be exhaustive, please feel free to add to it.
This list is a work in progress.
Small Insects or Animals or other Creatures are also found in OD&D. I like using mice, rats, mosquitoes, black flies and other types of nuisance creatures for a variety of purposes.
Large insects or animals or other Creatures are one of the monsters found in OD&D. I would have to say the most interesting creature to me under this heading would actually be the giant Sea Scorpion. This creature actually existed as fossil evidence has been found. This is a creature 5' long and 3' wide with a poisonous stinger, not something I want to meet, especially as it was capable of going to land as well as living in the water. The fossil record currently shows scorpions to be the oldest creatues pre-dating even most dinosaurs by 200 million years.
A more recent mammal I find interesting, not long extinct, is the giant rat. A 3' long rat is not something to cozy up to either.
