[OOC: "The blue blazes" are the flames of icy fire said to consume the original souls of those poor unfortunates whom the god of the Undead claims as his own . . . assuming of course that there IS a god of the Undead and that our kindly GM agrees with this whimsy. If not, we can come up with something else to which it can be a reference. ]

The halflings continue to keep a lookout wondering how long the other will dither around.
OOC: Halflings are an impatient folk and not given to deep thought and are also easily bored by humans and their social niceties.

Gwindeth, Hunter, Josiah & Karba's attention is pulled towards the trees and undergrowth just beyond the the graves and ruins, but you cannot see what is causing the the movement or low barely audible growls as of yet. All three also feel a sense of wrongness coming from that direction.
Everyone else is still focused on the interaction between the grime covered Dwarf Cleric and Sora the Paladin, who are also clueless.

Trask's thought balloon reads “What magic is this?? I wasn't wearing a short coat with symbols ablazing - but now I am! Did he do this? Would I jeopardize this investigation? Is this a test by the Elders? Is this one of the beastmen? Is he tempting me to my auld sins? Does he lead in these raids? Is that why he is so aggressive? Does he hate the orcs - or are they the larger hobgoblins? They say that there are anti-paladins in pretense as angels of light. Is this part of my penance, to have to think like a cop? Aw man, this penance thing is complicated."

While everyone except the twins, including Karba, is watching to see if the new guy and the big guy are gonna fight (somehow the big horned red skinned guy is focused on Trask and focused on whatever the twins are ferreting out), Hunter is keeping his attention on Axel, who always seems to get into things Better Left Alone. Axel has broken two of the dog's ribs (one with some meat still on it) and is tying them together with a string of either leather or catgut (It's catgut, but only Hunter is watching and he already knows what it is.) to form a capital T shape.
"Why, Axel, why?" moans Hunter.

Hunter plows into Axel, knocking him to the ground. "Stay DOWN!" he shouts as he rises, trying to simultaneously draw his weapon.
{all other of my PCs are obviously surprised, none more than Axel, who has dropped his T-bone.}

Completing the handshake, Sora opens his mouth to reply to the dwarf but is distracted as Josiah lets out an urgent grunt. When Sora gives him a sharp look in reply, Josiah gestures at the rustling undergrowth with his heavy crossbow. Sora immediately steps back towards his steed and begins to mount . . .
[OOC: If there is sufficient time before the commencement of hostilities for Sora to finish mounting, he will settle his shield onto his left arm, then pick up his regular crossbow and hold it ready.]

Out of the brush and from along the shadow enshrouded ruins are canine like beasts with ink colored fur, quills jutting up from their fur over their shoulders and bony growths run down their spines tapering down their furless tails. Their eyes are full of menace as their long deep red pointed tongues run across their sharp teeth. These beasts's barks sound like demented cackles punctuated with growls. There are about twenty in total creeping forward.
The shadows seem to deepen every second driving away the sunlight and the feeling wrongness that emanates from them only increases. The Dwarf stiffens briefly as he recognizes these beasts from earlier.

Grimdeath takes a position behind the other three ready to turn and meet any flanker or to engage any of the beasts that breaches the line (i.e. protecting their backs, or to move up and assist where needed. They will each time their attack to create the greatest chance of taking each of the beasts out and to strike first.

They will each time their attack to create the greatest chance of taking each of the beasts out and to strike first. [Ref Voice: The Canine-like monsters are between 20 - 30 yards away, not quite in range of your slings, thus you can still use them. Though there are trees close the party, yet the brush is 30 yards back (cleared by the steaders) and the shadows are coming from trees around you blocking the majority of direct sun light. The graves are 10 yards from both the ruins & road. The most of party is on the road with Josiah & Sora near Trask 10 yards away near the graves, while Axel and Hunter are closer to the ruins thus 10 yards closer to one group of the Canine-like beasties.
So once the beasties close within 15 yards Gwindeth can use her sling. The "Halflings" & Karba are 30 yards away, Sora, Josiah, Trask near or at the graves are 20 yards from them and lastly Hunter and Axel are 20 yards from them. I rolled initiative and both groups got the same, so everyone goes at the same time.
Let me know what is occurring and if this info changes anyone's stated actions. I should've given all this info before but I was dealing with the issues in OOC, so neglected to post in full. I'll endeavor to do better.]

Sora and Josiah take aim with their crossbows at the foremost beasts - hoping to put these down and perhaps frighten the ones behind them - and let loose. If there is time, both with shoot a second bolt. If there is not enough time to do this, both will drop their crossbows on the retaining straps. Josiah's mule not being a battle-trained beast, he will dismount, draw his two-hand sword and move to put himself between the beasts and the rest of the party. Sora will draw his sword and charge the beasts, intending to strike with his sword while allowing his trained warhorse to use it's hooves to do some damage of it's own.

Don't know if he's successful or falls flat on his face. He may see himself as Douglas Fairbanks Sr, but I doubt he reaches that potential.

Assuming Axel gets his head out of the clouds and ceases to be shocked {"Why you HIT me, Hunter! Shame!"} he would undoubtedly throw out his instinctive Sleep spell at the nearest crowd of shadowy scaries. That is, if he remembered to prepare his Sleep spell for the day. I give him a 75% chance of remembering, the same chance he remembers he's still holding his T-bone when he points his spell. Mr GM (the guy wearing the big red "GM/DM/Diety" cap) will determine what happens with Axel, because I'd be toooo tempted to Fudge (tm) the dice.

Karba, meantime, does have her generic sword drawn and intends to chop their snouts, one at a time. Not much of a tactician, but a dog is a dog. Or so she thinks.

Sora shoots his bolt hitting one of the canine-like beasts, which falls to the ground before scrabbling back to hits paws to continue forward; with a bolt sticking into its shoulder making it have a slight limp. The wound oozes black blood. Josiah's bolt flies high and off into the trees, as the mule is repulsed by the beasts. Once he dismounts it flees down the road the way you came. They will close before you can reload your cross bows, so switching to melee is advisable. In the next round the rest of your described actions will take place if you still desire them.

All but Togork hit with their slinged stones, with his flying wide and into the brush beyond. Two of the beasties crumple into a heap among their fellows, who jump over their bodies. but one got hit with a stone that glanced off its quills, hopping to the side before charging forward again.

[Ref voice: I rolled a d6 & Axel kept his wits enough to cast the Sleep Spell.] 7 of the wretched beasts wall into a fitful slumber, these are those closest to the ruins near both Hunter & Axel. This leaves 10 beasties charging forward with rage & malice in their eyes.

Two sum up: 7 beasties are asleep, two are dead, two are wounded to varying degrees and 9 are unwounded.
Sora is charging on horseback sword drawn.
Josiah & Trask are awaiting the fell beasties near the graves, while Karba and the 'Halflings" are on the road.
Hunter & Axel are near the ruins and have some respite as the beasties closest to them are caught in a magical slumber.
Round Two: Two Beasties come at Sora, two each towards Josiah & Trask, while the last five turn towards Axel & hunter to their chagrin.
Again matching initiatives, thus simultaneous actions this round.
