This was posted at DF and it raises a question that is fun to explore. Several years ago, as I had several great-grandchildren enter the campaign and I tried this with them to see what kind of results I would get. One of the criteria I have for bringing a child into the game is that they have to have read at least 20 fantasy books off of a list that includes the Gygax inspiration books so that they come into the game with some background/grounding in fantasy. And of course they have all heard fairy tales/folk tales from birth. Here is the relevant portion of the post in bold:
It is a lot of fun to see what new players come up with when you let them have a go at defining what spells do.

I have offered this to my players over the last 3 or 4 years but have not gotten any takers yet. Odd?!?! If I were the player I would jump at the chance to redefine many of the spells. I am planning on doing a whole re-write myself just to shake it up; however, I would love to see the players do it.

If a spell needs more than about thirty words to describe, go back to the drawing board. Not an iron-clad rule, but I do try to keep spell descriptions as vague as possible to allow creative stunts in play.

Has anyone done this and what kind of results did you get? Crimhthan The Great if you are still around, what did they come up with? You make them read 20 books to get into the game! Wow!

About 20 books, heavy on the ERB and REH, not counting mythology and fairy tales, etc. that I consider indispensable to a normal childhood. Every group of kids comes up with different spells, it is a hoot.
