Gosh, thank you I was not born with a lot of RAM in my brain. I can't remember things at the table. Therefore I must write everything down in very simple ways. Also, most things I write are based on the work of other OSR people. The art is all stuff you can find with google and (especially) bing searches, and from scrap.oldbookillustrations.com/archive/LOL "slick" that is like the opposite of me

Cool. But I already do it this way in my games and have been. Since I use the Delving Deeper rules set it already has a thief class but I still allow non thieves to make attempts at most of their skills.

I will call the campaign "the 19th castle". I have not decided whether to procedurally generate wilderness hexes or to use the outdoor survival map yet. If other DMs come along, they will be welcome to run in the same shared world for the sake of the several characters. Hooray, we got our test campaign kicked off here at home today. It's a chance for the kids and my wife to try ODD (we have played labyrinth lord rules so it's no stretch) and for me to test out my ability to DM old style on the fly with FLAILSNAILS rules.
Everything went perfectly. The setting is Blackmarsh by Rob Conley, which seems perfect for hex crawling. Just the right amount of detail. 5 mile hexes, which I dislike, but I should get used to if I plan to run ODD out in public.
We rolled characters earlier in the week so I could practice helping someone make their first one. Notes: need to bind the quick start PDFs into a single document. Too much loose paper. No problems with the roll ups. Tic-tac-toe method produces fine ability scores as usual. I provided several different ODD character sheets, but everyone picked the same one, designed by Dyson Logos. I can't blame them, but there's no obvious place to mark down encumbrance or move speed. Need to think about this. Will consider ditching the quick start equipment. Maybe keep it as a loose sheet just in case. Need to prepare extra spell descriptor sheets. Consider whether to give all spells at creation or just all level 1 spells. OR some other way. Btb it's all spells, but then that removes some of the fun of leveling up.
All rolls are theoretically roll-high is better. But almost immediately, the PCs had to make an INT roll to remember something their characters heard but they all forgot. That's a roll-under. Must think about this. Worth writing a new rule for the sake of consistency? Probably not.
Morale: morale is inverted from D&D. Low morale number is better which makes rolling high good. Easy to transpose from stat blocks on the fly I found. No need to mark anything down.
Movement: scale inches was easy and fun for the kids. Wife confused but it was free form enough not to matter.
Combat: declare actions, then roll initiative by sides, then proceed through combat phases. This worked well. In the case of ties, go by DEX order.
Light sources: we didn't get to the end of a torch, so hard to say.
Encumbrance: need to put an encumbrance chart on the same chart as attack matrix and save matrix. Only fair
Monster Attack matrix: need to add a line for <1 HD.
Bandages were helpful. Death and dying rules well received.

Mapping: my daughter was gung ho about mapping and did an excellent job. What a champ.
Calling: no caller. Just declare actions. In combat, it's before initiative. During exploration time, it's clockwise looking down starting from DM. Actions once declared can be cancelled but not changed.
Tracking equipment and encumbrance: they all did great.
Handling unusual actions: they all want to play Thief-y characters. I gave them X-in-6 chances to do stuff. Not sure; may instead use the Rule of Seven. 1 in 6 chance to pick pockets seems right.
Battlemat: I will bring one, but it will not see much use IMO.
Calendar: again, my daughter was a champ tracking the days of the week and month. As it turned out there were no holidays or anything so there was very little to track. Just mark off each day.
Weather: the weather on the campaign days was actually pretty good, so weather was not a factor. I'll have to keep notes on this stuff.

It's pretty clear that a decent textbook/workbook document would help other DMs tremendously. I'll start to develop one.
Of particular use were 3x5 index cards. Used to pass notes and keep track of important but transient details.
