Ents were designed to be the Shepherds of the Forests, They have mastery over other growing things and are almost immortal. Huorns are talking trees that are also capable of locomotion. Ents are tree-like Giants, that have a lot of tree-like characteristics. Huorns are talking trees and you could create variations based on tree type, e.g., Oak, Maple, Ash, Yew, etc.
Treants could be redone as a cross between Ents and trolls created as a twisted evil thing by evil Magic-Users.
Huorns were also called Galbedirs, Lamorni, and Ormoni by Tolkien and all meant "talking trees." So you can perhaps have three Tribes of Huorns. According to Treebeard, Huorns have become queer, wild and dangerous.

Nice breakdown, The Archivist. Very helpful. I have never really considered the Huorns. Perhaps they should be included in the "woods" and or "optional woods" wilderness encounter charts in my campaign. Hmm.

Thanks, The Archivist! I think huorns are pretty interesting (no matter if they're capable of locomotion or not) and could be used to great effect in a wilderness based adventure. And tetramorph, I for one certainly can see how they would fit in your Dun Kells setting!

We like this, Ents are the real thing, Huorns are less intelligent and impulsive and dangerous though not evil and Treants are twisted and evil. Sounds good to us.

Hey, The Bear Hawk, I think I've done a few of those, but it was a long time ago and I'm not sure where I've put those drawings... It might be a good idea to make a new one at some point!

You could do that, but remember that treant is just a contraction of tree-giant. Also remember that Tolkien's ents also came in variations that resembled oak, maple, ash, and so on.

Along with the previous suggestions regarding variations based on tree type, e.g., Oak, Maple, Ash, Yew, etc. , you could use traits and personality drawn from the celtic/druidic view of tree s.

I also like using the deviant name Treants as a cross between Ents and Trolls, that is inspired thinking! Have an exalt!
