The more skills a PC possesses, the longer it will take him to learn/improve a skill. A PC's Skill Total is calculated by summing the levels of each skill they have (0 counts as 0). To increase a skill the PC must train for a number of weeks equal to their Skill Total + the next higher level in the the skill they are increasing. Only one skill can be trained for at a time, and stopping before finishing forfeits all benefits up to that point. Skill that are unknown must be trained up to Level 0 before continuing to Level 1+.
A player my declare they are starting to train in a skill at any time and must allocate time (mention it to the Ref) every day during their weeks of training.
Example: Jo has Engineering-1, Pistol-2, and Mechanic-1. He has a Skill Total of 4. Jo wants to increase his Mechanic to 2, so he must train for 4+2=6 weeks to raise his level of Mechanic to 2. His Skill Total is now 5. Next he wants to learn how to use a Vacc Suit up to level 0, so he must train for 5+0 weeks to get Vacc Suit to level 0. If he wants to go for Vacc Suit-1 next, he'll have to train for 5+1=6 more weeks.
This is pretty much how Mongoose Traveller does it and is the best method I've seen in Traveller.

Interesting, that's definitely faster than Classic Traveller's rules, is the time dedicated?

Interesting, that's definitely faster than Classic Traveller's rules, is the time dedicated? Frank, I'm going to say it's not. I'm going to say you have to work at the training every day, but not exclusively. It is a lot faster than CT's 4 years, plus 4 years to make it really stick, but it does add up as you get more skill levels. Say you have a Skill Total of 10, and want to train an unknown skill up to level 3. That would be 10 weeks to level 0, 11 more to level 1, 13 more to level 2 and 15 more to level 3 for a total of 49 weeks on that one skill. The next skill starts with a Total of 13, so it gets worse for the next skill you're improving. It's still faster than CT, but it's certainly not a new skill level every week, so it shouldn't be too unbalancing. Especially, because it might take 5+ years real time to play out a few weeks in game time.

Looks like a good system. What about training to improve *attributes*? Those failed aging rolls are bumming me... ;-)

Those failed aging rolls are bumming me... ;-) Yeah, they bug me, too, but I'm afraid we all have to suffer with declining attributes as we age...unless you find some anagathics somewhere. Of course, they have their own problems.

Of course, they have their own problems. He he. Don't remind me about declining attributes, my shoulder hurts when I laugh. But seriously, wasn't it possible under CT to embark in a training program to improve fine motor skils, i.e. dexterity? Dex 9 for a surgeon is just shy of a +2, so I can picture Wade putting some real effort into trying to improve that. Not that he will manage in game time, I am just thinking character color: spends a lot of time in jump training motor skills.

In Classic Traveller, you can attempt a physical training program, for the duration of the program, it gives you +1 to Str, Dex, and End, but the bonuses never become permanent.

You beat me to it, Frank. Yes, you can do that and I won't even make you roll for success as long as you role play keeping up the training program.

Although the campaign's general tech level is "only" A (10), our current late TL 8 culture already has computer-assisted surgery gear. Perhaps such a set of gear is something the crew should look into acquiring?
