Geological oddities, extensive underground caverns, places you could spend a lifetime exploring. Some of us create massive worlds, Arneson created a small area that was massively detailed and made explorable.

A fortress throughout recorded history, lost to the Egg of Coot twice, but by treachery or gross negligence.

I find it odd and somewhat poetic that I have always been fascinated by Ruins, from the very beginning of my time playing OD&D, and when many, many years (over 30) later I read this for the first time, I was struck with how many ideas seemed to have just floated out of Blackmoor into the ether to be claimed by those like myself, seemly by random chance - but was it really random? Inquiring minds want to know!

The famous Wolf's Head Pass! Does your game world have landmarks like these that mark borders and limits of influence?

The highly unique and highly odd, Inn, The Comeback Inn, easy to enter unless you are Evil/Chaotic, but so hard to leave. What do you think, does this difficulty leaving apply to the proprietor too? Whose is the proprietor and what about the staff. How odd to have such a place in a village of this size. What else is know about The Comeback Inn? Will we yet learn more? Do you put things like this in your game world to pique your players curiosity, do you create mysteries? Do you create things that your players might never solve?

From here he goes into The Blackmoor Castle's History and the history of the site itself.
From there he moves on to "Haunted Rooms and the Like." I immediately got a big kick out of this, as I am wont to say, "and the like."
Areas covered are the: Black Hall (No. 1) The Catacombs (No. 2) A) The Tombs B) The Gallery of the Undead C) The Dungeons D) The Wizard's Pit E) The Black Pit F) Miscellaneous
The Tower ("The Bloody Tower," "The Terrible Tower," "The Wizard's Tower."

Here is more about the evolution of Blackmoor and the movement into areas around Blackmoor. Also about the use of the Outdoor Survival Board.

Note the footnotes. In Open Terrain 13 chances out of 20 for no encounter, but in Woods and Mountain, only 6 chances out of 20 for no encounter.

The rest times seem extreme to me and I do not use them in my OD&D. Move 7 days, then rest 7 days, that is just too unrealistic for me to run with.

Budget 3,000 Gold Pieces for Model II, I wonder what the number were for Model I? Shows Wholesale and Retail Prices. Note that there are some references to the Gor books, I remember the Gor books, I read the first few, but after that they went downhill quick. They did have some interesting things, the tarns were pretty cool and the location of the world was also a plus.I do not remember a lot of detail after 40+ years since I looked at them. Arneson did have Slaves in his price list. I would note here that in the real world there is no point in time during recorded history that slavery was not practiced world wide. Even today in 2020 (now 2023) slavery is oddly enough still present in significant parts of the world.

Now Dave gets into his philosophy of the Wilderness or Outdoors. His premise seems to be that the current level of civilization in this area at least, has not been vigorous for long enough to clear the roads and make travel within the kingdom reasonably safe. The players themselves will need to clear the territory of monsters and make travel long the roads safe and along those lines make it safe for farming to spread across the countryside around towns and villages.

Now he goes into populating the map with monsters and encounters and how he does it.The next several paragraphs goes into a fair amount of detail on how to do this. You can see here the domain game that was ported into Dungeons & Dragons. He also mentions a central hex and the six hexes surrounding it as the initial area to be cleared.

This system is quite elegant and seems to be easy to use. This handles migration of monsters from other areas to cleared areas.

Migration always tends to move towards the central internal areas of your campaign.

Chance cards are something I think most referees would find useful. Chance cards are not a general item, they are something that you create specifically for a given campaign.

I have zero artistic talent and my maps are very rough and dirty. I often just use plain old style computer paper and pencil and just sketch it out with a few lines and word pictures. But now there are these wonderful stamps and anyone came make a great map, not the map the artist makes that you just drool over, but far superior to what I could do otherwise and an awesome product in its own right. Go to GAME STAMPS a map-making tool for role-playing games I am really happy that I backed this Kickstarter!

I have only used a regular pencil. Colored pencils would be a waste for me as I am color-blind.
