Over the course of talking about rules and campaigns here, my own philosophies, approaches and desires for my campaign shifted quite a bit. Especially the evolution of "gonzoland" into my little Perilous Realms supplement made me realize that my previous (perhaps overly serious) Christendom campaign actually simply fit into my (perhaps overly gonzo) rule-lite musings. So the two merged and I've asked Admin Pete to rename my campaign sub-forum after my little supplement: Perilous Realms. I am so committed to rules-lite because I could run a serious Christendom campaign or a fully gonzo "hobbit on acid" campaign without changing any rules. If we bracket any monster stats and world-building rules, then the rules left over for normal play can be extremely lite! Some of my principles are becoming: Do not resolve by mechanic what could be resolved through role-play Make all mechanics as abstract as possible and only concrete when necessary In terms of my philosophy of play, in a conversation over on finarvyn's board, I came up with a kind of three-part description of the approaches I have experienced from different players to D&D: 1. Character sheet as ticket to fantasy land 2. Character build as system maximization 3. Character acting as amateur dramatics I think the sweet spot for me is number "1," when there is a blend of the other two when helpful towards advancing number 1! Rules lite and focus on role-play and referee adjudication is my key to this. So, enjoy the name change to my campaign sub-forum!
