Something just occurred to me, in Dangerous Journeys Gygax went back to the Arneson well for some of the mechanics. In writing up OD&D, Gygax stripped out Arneson's percentile based mechanics and replaced it with the d20. In Dangerous Journeys he went back to the percentile based mechanics to avoid problems with TSR (didn't work but he tried).

I noticed that as well. If you look at DJ and Lejendary Adventures, you can see how LA looks like it was a further refinement of DJ into a simpler system; percentile as well.

D&D HERETICS!!! Just Saying ;-) Doesn't mean I disagree lol What do you mean? D&D heretics? Why? It is well established that Gygax dumped the Arneson version in numerous places, but later on used Arneson's stuff. If TSR had not killed DJ, Gygax would have had a moral obligation to pay Arneson royalties for it too and by extension LA too. In fact, IMO every Commercial RPG company should be paying royalties to Arneson and his heirs, along with all the video game "rpgs."

Hmm, I'd never thought of it like that, but I believe you may be on to something.

Dangerous Journeys is massive, but IIRC it was supposed to be modular in design, but I think I would have to see it used to see how practical that was.

PD & SRG,
Music to my ears and I'm with you both! Too many games (and books) to read/enjoy! I'm certainly giving it my all. I'll have to go back and read Prime as well. I've seen many reviews of DJ's system as being complex. Prime's rules seemed pretty approachable if I recall correctly

I need to do a deep dive post about a current read through sometime in the near future...

I think the learning curve was having to do with the new vocabulary. Gary tried to steer away from (or may have been required to do so) the more common D&D vocabulary? So he called things like mana/spell points differently as well as character and race characteristics.

I will have to get my hands on this someday, so I can at least take a look at it.
