free-standing tower, ~15 feet high, space for family, poorly trapped, wizard rents from clueless owner
Aetheling's Tower
A squat, free-standing "tower" stands just outside the town and seems to looks up at some of the taller buildings. Its footprint is an awkward oval. The crenellations look useless and the entire thing gives the impression that the builders intended a tower for some purpose, failed to plan it into the castle, placed it here, gave up on building it after not too long, but then added the impression of battlements so that it would look finished.
If you try to enter through the seasonally-decorated door, be sure to speak your true name when the invisible sentry asks, or you may be pelted with 1d4 pebbles from an unseen assailant. Having passed through this ordeal and the doorway, you will find yourself in the living area of a small family: the fairly young wizard, his wife, and their daughter who has many tiny dolls made of grass and sticks placed around the room. You now notice that the room has six windows placed more or less evenly around its perimeter, each large enough that the very idea of defense borders on absurd. There are braids of garlic and onion hanging up as well as racks and racks of other herbs in various states and media. The low wooden table has three stools beside it. On the far side of the room, a set of stairs leads upward to the "roof" of the tower. On the way up the stairs, you pass on your left the entrance to a tight crawlspace jammed with strange items, many of which are in arm's reach. You are sure that if you dug your way in, you would find much more in this "attic."
Passing the crawlspace, you come out onto the roof. Standing here, you realize that you stand far higher than the "fortifications" and could easily be shot by someone standing on the ground. The only thing up here that looks worthwhile is a poorly-made brazier somehow firmly affixed to the stone of the roof. If you get close to it, it smells like freshly roasted garlic, among other things.
The legal owner of the tower is Baron Twinge who inherited it and has no notion about its contents. In fact, it is uncertain that he personally even considers the tower at all.

I hope you don't mind. <button disabled="" class="c-attachment-insert--linked o-btn--sm">Attachment Deleted</button> Why I oughtta... But seriously, how dare you like and use my posts?! But seriously, I'm glad you liked it. I've been trying to edit my stuff less. Throw it up there. Seems to be at least as good this way... Edit: And hey, turns out my stuff looks good as a PDF!

When I do these things, I feel like I'm just demoing something that is very obvious to everyone. But what you say here suggests that...that's NOT so obvious to everyone in this hobby. Did I understand right? I mean, to me, these generators are just an aid to creativity: they get you started and then you fill in whatever you want. Is this actually news to some?

I mean, to me, these generators are just an aid to creativity: they get you started and then you fill in whatever you want. Is this actually news to some? If you start selling or giving products away for free, such as, at Drive Thru RPG or from your own website, there will indeed be people who need an example or two and will complain if there are none. For us it is just an aid to creativity, for many it is a mystery that they will need help deciphering. Yeah, sad, but true! To put this out, a good idea is an intro to the item, and some discussion about the use, then the generator and then examples and then tips on using it. Expand it to about 6-8 pages, and if you do that for 3-5 generators, totaling 18-40 pages you have a product that is ready to go, don't for get 10-12 bits of art which you can get for free. That is the sad state of education, it should be obvious to everyone, but sadly it is not. Have you looked at other free pdfs? Download some of the free stuff from Drive Thru RPG, the stuff that is more one person doing it and see what they look like.

Plus, adding in the example would be even better. I was aiming for one side of a page, but two pages would be cool with that additional information.

Thank you, sir, but I am a dabbler and experimenter only! That looks great! It really does, it makes you realize that anyone can write the stuff you see in publications. I mean, no offense to the hardowrking authors, I just mean it's possible for even my stuff to look good with a little ard added and a sentence of explanation. Make me wonder what else is in that notebook of yours, The Semi-Retired Gamer!

Make me wonder what else is in that notebook of yours, The Semi-Retired Gamer ! All in due time... First, you must learn the secret handshake and perform the sacred ritual hengest! In truth, mostly just unfinished ideas, prompts, and kernels of stuff BUT I'm working on completing the notebook I always wanted to do.

The Semi-Retired Gamer How did you do that, by the way? Did you somehow simply plop the art into a document or did you have to rock out with LaTeX or something?!

The Semi-Retired Gamer How did you do that, by the way? Did you somehow simply plop the art into a document or did you have to rock out with LaTeX or something?! hengest I just searched for free to use wizard tower illustrations in Google images. Found and saved the images I wanted to use. In LibreOffice I used the insert tab and the image option. I just messed around with the size of the image and the placement of the image in the document. I have NO experience with LaTex, photoshop, gimp (Pulp Fiction or otherwise), or any other type of editing software. I used to be more proficient with LibreOffice/OpenOffice but I'm starting to get more familiarity with it again.

Cool, The Semi-Retired Gamer, thanks for explaining. I should give it a shot. I set some very simple stuff in LaTeX years ago and liked it, it gives you pretty much total control. But I didn't learn enough to develop or retain any real facility with it.

I have something I could have added if it had not died in The "Great Flood" I had speciallized towers for wiz's for each of the schools of magic from later ed's of D&D. Each of the 8 school's Towers had an ability conferred on it's owner and the shape was dif for each one. Man, could do so much w this, should have been in the purple book.
