This type of question has been asked frequently before, but not--as far as I can tell--at this particular forum. So...
How many players are typically involved in your 2015 game sessions?
How many players were typically involved in your ((insert your formative D&D years here)) game sessions?

I have 6 regulars in my Saturday game. I just started running another game on Sunday and that group has 5.

My current Group has 11 players, but never do they all show up at the same time. I like to have 6-8

Between three and six players, generally. I prefer trios as they balance small social groups with enough breadth of interests and playstyles to remain vital. (Trios also mean that "what the party needs" is no longer really an issue since one of the classical four classes will be left out - suck it up and play what you want to!)

1975-1979 12-30 players per game (all 18 to 23 years old)
2015 4-10 players per game (all ages)

I have 6 players, if they all show up. Last Saturday I was treated to 8 players at a CoC game, but that was something special.

Thanks guys, some great info here. You may be interested in the poll I ran on the Delving Deeper G+ group over the last few days... It currently shows that, across 42 votes, 4-6 is the most frequent number of players, with an overall average of 4.2 players per group. The comments posted here show that, across 13 statements, we have an average of 7.7 players. Even excluding Admin Pete's humongous 12-30 group, we have an average of 6.5 players per game session here, which seems to be about 150% as many as over on the DD G+ group. That's interesting to know

Back in the 80's: It varied between 1-4 players, usually 3, I'd say. On a couple of occasions I tried with larger groups (about 10 players) but I found that difficult to handle. Personally I prefer smaller groups. Back in the 90's: Usually 3 players, with some variations. Some solo playing, and sometimes there was about 4-5 players. Currently: Umm... zero...?

That's interesting to know When I was in college I thought 16-18 was the perfect numbers of players at one time; however, the games with 20-some players and the high of 30 players was a blast. However, my hearing was a lot better 40 years ago and I was more mentally sharp back then than I am now. As much as I hate to admit it I have lost at least two steps mentally, just like a athlete of 60 compared to when he was 20. Over the last 7 years we have had over 10 players on about 6 occasions and the high was 14 players with five - 10 year olds. That stretched me a lot - so now about 8-10 is what I consider perfect.

Most of my gaming has been 3-6 players. I have had a few times when there have been more players with sporadic attendance resulting in usually 3-6 players at the table.
I had a few experiences with way more players.
My first experience running a game outside my little group of friends was at an MIT game convention when I was 16. One of my friends had been busy recruiting players for me, and by the time I got to the table, there were 16 players. I am still impressed I managed to keep that herd happy.
Another experience was my first year of grad school. We had decided to make sure we got a notice for the gaming club in the first issue of the school paper that year. The result was a jam packed room. That summer, I had picked up Fantasy Hero, and the night before had run it for the first time, and that was what was in my backpack for the meeting. I was the only one there ready to run a game. In quick order I had some 10 players. Eventually more players were recruited and the game reached 16 players, with at least 10 showing every Saturday. I tried to split the group, which ended up with one dedicated group of now 10 players or so (which slowly shrunk to 5 or 6) and a second group that soon faltered.
After that MIT game convention, I joined the MIT gaming club which had a culture of several GMs, each with their own campaign, and a huge stable of players. The GMs would allow PCs from each others campaigns. I also developed ties with an older group of players and some of them would occasionally play in my games (and sometimes I'd play in theirs).
The college (RPI) games club featured one core of players (mostly playing Cold Iron) with a few players playing in all of the different campaigns (with different PCs for each campaign), and a few dedicated to just one or two campaigns.

My table-top Dun Kells campaign is about 3-4. I would like it more like 5-6.
When I run a Planet Eris session publicly via "meetup," I sometimes have upwards of 12.
It is too many. I don't know what to do about it. I am the only public DM in that campaign world right now and people have PCs they want to run.
I don't know how to split up a public campaign, but I may need to.
Good question!

Often I would visit game stores in Austin. I was always impressed by how much more old school stuff some of them had. I specifically remember dragons lair having Labrynth Lord and Swords & Wizardry and adventures for both of them. In Waco we had a nice shop where I bought most of my 1e books from (all in awful shape however) . I remember hearing about an OD&D group in Austin and thought that was incredibly cool and always wanted to play. Keep it up!

If you're ever in the area I encourage you to drop in for a game. Tetramorph is a pretty humble guy but don't let that fool you ... he runs a really good game. I've been having a blast.

If I'm ever back in the Austin area I'll try. Out here in Houston now where I can't find an Old School game to save my life.

Shame those of you looking for a game are not here in Columbus, OH. I would gladly take some more players. (Of course I do need to let you know that I have a couple of kids in the game - 7th grade boy and his 3rd grade sister).

Yeah, that is unfortunate - Ohio seems like a looong way from Helsingborg, Sweden... Now that would be fun, take a trip around the work and game in as many cities as possible. If I was ever able to travel like that I would definitely let you know. Now if you are ever coming here you let me know.

@the Perilous Dreamer...and I would gladly join in. The kids are no problem. I was "this close" to getting a group together during the summer months but kids are what made it fall apart. It turned out that the only reason those of us with kids got the invite was for our kids to keep the other kids occupied. One of the people with kids wasn't bringing them because they were going to their fathers house. Short and sweet, there was a big, melodramatic production by a relative (one of the players) about having a nervous breakdown about entertaining kids. I just politely bowed out.

Sorry to hear that, sad an "adult" acts like that. It is fun gaming with kids - talk about unique and creative - fresh eyes.
