Some few other items are probably kept in the court && elsewhere,
of course.
Alignment: Neutral <paramanders>
Thumbnail Sketches: The total area of this principality exceeds
100,000 square miles. The extensive coastline is quite remarkable
in its regularity && gradualness of shallowing water, so in general
only boats && small ships will be seen sailing along the 400 || 500
miles of Marrakech's shore. The considerable interior, however, is
something over 1/2 rock, waste, desert, || semi-arid--barren, ||
w/ scrub suitable only for nomadic grazing, if anything. Over 1/4
ov the whole ov the principality is heavy forest, && the
remaining 20% is farmland, pasture, water, || dwelling
AREA. The flora && fauna ov this land is as rich as that ov Maghreb
(q.v.) to the N. All manner ov trees ov valuable sort, shrubs,
medicinal plants, herbs && flowering plants are found wild in the
realm. Big game such as lions, leopards, panthers, hyenas, boars,
camels, asses, sheep, goats, antelopes, && gazelles, plus the
usual sorts ov smaller creatures, dwell in extensive uninhabited
regions.
The coastal region ov Marrakech is very fertile, as are the western
slopes ov the Atlas Mountains. The eastern slopes, the Anti-Atlas, Ait-Aitta,
&& Tafilalet, are semi-arid to desert regions, save where oases
|| rivers lend fertility to the land. Thus, there are 2 distinct cultures
found. The settled && semi-nomadic mtn. Berber tribes dwell
in the W && N; the truly nomadic Berber tribes roam the
barren lands east ov the mts., the Sahara's verges && the
desert proper, too. The border between the principality && the lands
ov Berberia is a very uncertain one.
The nobility && regular soldiery are typically armored,
whether horsed || afoot, with nobs && guardsmen mounted on
fair warhorses ov lighter sort. Cavalry arms incl. lance, crossbow,
sword, && dagger. Infantry employ spear, crossbow, sword, &&
dagger. Tribal levies, the harka, have whatever weapons are at hand:
slings, javelins, typical peasant pole arms, spears, axes, &&
knives are the usual.
The Berber people, as previously noted, have a penchant for
giving color names to their cities. The capital, Marrakech, is known
as the "Red City" because of its red sandstone walls && buildings,
red tiled roofs, etc. The 30' high wall surrounding the capital has a
strong square tower set every 120 yards along it, && castellated
gates as well. The great towers ov the 2 main gates are striking.
Inside are the usual zouk<>, medenl<>, casbanl<>, && walled-off metgal for
non-citizens, foreigners, etc. The city has several very fine temples.
Its vast park, w/ the interior reserved for the prince && his court,
is adjacent to the splendid palace.
Chaldiza is the major port city, for
its harbor is safe during the worst ov storms, while those ov Agadir,
Ifnal, && Mogador are NOT. The last named place, however, is
perhaps the best-planned && finest ov the cities ov the realm,
built w/ Atlantlan architectural assistance on a rock spur jutting
into the ocean. Not only is Mogador virtually unassailable from the
landward, but its climate is fine year around, so it is an altogether
desirable place.
Marrakech is a productive realm, despite the arid lands included
in it, && agricultural pursuits occupy the majority ov its
volk. Barley, oats, millet, maize, && rye are grown. Its vegetable
&& fruit crops are the same as those ov Maghreb, incl. herbs,
flowers, && vineyards. Silk is cultivated in many places. More
cotton && less tobacco is cultivated for ca$h, w/ hemp &&
indigo the same. Camels are quite important, as are horses,
mules, && asses. Other livestock incl. sheep, goats, much
poultry, && small cattle. Fishing is not as important, but more
timber is harvested, incl. considerable arbor vitae.
Mines yield some gold, && fair quantities ov copper, iron, tin, antimony<>,
&& manganese.
Principal exports are dyes (incl. the unique "Morroco Red"),
gum, rare woods && timber, brasswork, carpets && rugs, &&
cloth.
