Back in the early 80s, when I was around 20-22 I used to go to a lot of big conventions. There usually were about 6 tournaments in the weekends. After winning like 4 out of 6 I started to be very competitive. It was no longer about having fun , it was all about winning. this went on for about 5 years and my currant score is somewhere around 55 wins total. I was not having fun, I was competing. I out grew that but I wish I had kept my mind on fun. I can understand that sometimes we miss out on the thing were originally wanted because we get tunnel vision. I rather doubt I would do very well in tournaments. I would be more focused on the DMing.

Now at 65, running 12-16 players is a stretch, but bitd I have run over 20 up to 30 and it was easy then. Now I prefer 8 or so and miss the days when I my eyes and ears were in their prime. Where on earth did you have 30 players? I mean in what real-world area did you play? Some sort of commons room or a pool hall? I have never played in such a large group. I think the largest regular group I played in was...five plus the ref. There was a group with three plus the ref for a couple years.

I give a "bump" to the OP by PD when he was the Admin. I also read the "I hate fun" essays. Interesting, read the second or you might walk away with the wrong impression.

I think the largest regular group I played in was...five plus the ref. There was a group with three plus the ref for a couple years. In college the dorm was a four story building with six wings, three wings on each side with the RA room and elevators and stairs in the middle. Each three wings (on each floor) had a large "living" room and a smaller room. You could just pack 30 people in the smaller room and so we did. The full number only played on occasion, but usually hung out and watched the game. It was pretty orderly, because we were all the same age 18-21, all college students and all focused on the game, no cell phones or other distractions back then. People did not overtalk each other and everyone was brief/concise and everyone was ready when called on. Back then the only time I played with fewer than 12 was during the summers when I would ref for my two younger brothers.
