My players are fond of using the spell Continual Light on things like round flat stones, the end of 10' poles and other useful places and they can be covered if you want, when you want. You can limit the amount of light by creatively covering the stone or whatever you are using. You can also cast Continual Light on objects and place them inside lanterns. Do they carry extras to toss into deep holes and other places trying to get a look at things?

This is a thread I started back in 2015, I am assuming most of you have not seen it. Tells you pretty much everything you need to know about torches.

So a real Torch burns 20 to 60 minutes. I assume the design affects that. Cloth soaked with a thicker liquid would burn longer and it seems a tighter wrap is better and tying it with wire would make it burn longer too. So with experimentation you could probably get a reliable 60 minutes or even a little more. So when the players are buying torches you could use the price as your behind the screen guide as to how long the torches last. Cheap torches only 20 minutes and the most expensive ones last an hour +1d4 turns.
