Your orders are taken and shortly afterwards you are enjoying slabs of barely cooked beef, various sorts of potatoes, a bit of salad here and there and mugs of a good dark ale from a pair of large pitchers set on either end of the table. Takheal and Tokheletoi use the tips of their claws to cut and handle the meat. They slice it into chunks small enough to eat in polite company, and they each put away a sizeable portion. "This is very good," Tokheletoi says at one point. "It is too bad we cannot have this aboard ship upon occasion."

Hearing how much his crewmates love REALLY fresh beef, Cyril considers carrying live cattle, but he has already shoveled enough cattle byproduct to fill a lifetime quota.

OOC: I would think a really good (57th century) beef substitute would be available. I mean the "Impossible Burger" really is very close now. Maybe you just need better programming, or a change in raw materials, for your food printer...??

It's already possible to 3D print "meat" that is (for most people) completely indistinguishable from the real thing. But since Peng Et Al know that it's fake, they like to claim that they can actually tell that it's fake. My brother was this way about milk, back when we were kids. For several years, we had a milk goat, the milk from which the rest of us [Mom, Dad, me and my two sisters] drank with relish. But Eugene insisted that it tasted wrong and refused to imbibe. Then one night when the subject came up yet again, with an evil grin Dad said, "Actually, you've been drinking goat's milk for two months. I've simply been refilling the same store-bought jug the whole time." In response, Eugene bolted up from the table and barely made it to the bathroom before loudly emptying the entire contents of his stomach.

Cyril: Do you suppose carrying cattle in low passage would spoil the flavor? Anyone?

Peng muses aloud, "Not sure how that would help. We'd still need to freeze most of the meat, right? I mean, even the whole bunch of us would take a while to polish off a whole steer."

"What is the human expression, speak for yourself?"

Peng gives the [previously described as "small"?] female Aslan a bland look . . .
[Internal Thought:]Riiigght. A good sized steer yields around 400 kilos of muscle meat, plus another forty or so in bone marrow and organ meats. That's a LOT of mass to put away.[/Internal Thought]
. . . then wordlessly returns to slicing up his rare steak.

Between bites Gilroy askes the gathered group, "Do you really think Blackjack is going to 'retire' and go off with that Corporate woman?"
Then he muses with a fork of meat half way to his mouth, "If he does, I wouldn't mind buying a ship share. I'd have to get a loan to do it, but owning a ship I'm traveling on would be a new one for me."
"A man of property!" he says with a grin, "Who'd a thunk it?"

It might be in my sig. *looks after posting*

Captain Firestorm might get it all, but I think Blackjack might spread ownership out more than that." Gil shrugs and adds, "Even if Raven gets it all, she might want to sell some shares to spread the risk."

Peng swallows, follows it with a chug of beer, burps, puts in . . .
"I'm not a'tall wealthy, so I'll just stay a hirelin'."
. . . then returns to eating.

The dinner passes with each of you telling tales about your past adventures. Nobody can be really sure that the stories are true or just flights of imagination, but mostly they make you each smile and chuckle.
After dinner ends and your bills are paid, it's time to go.
Gil suggests, "Why don't we just see if we can take the night shuttle back to the Starport. Nothing much is going on here and I'm a bit worried about our ride, seeing as we have that stowaway aboard and that that other ship seems to be after him."
"Say, did you get the impression that they considered him more of a piece of property than a person." Gil asks, a worried look on his face, "Slavers, do you think? We have no idea if that sort of thing goes on out here in the Mantan Subsector."

"This was a wonderful meal," she explains. "I agree with Gil's suggestion," Takheal says.

Peng nods at Gil's suggestion regarding transport. When Gil goes on to speculate about the nature of those other "traders," Peng clears his throat and opines: "Uh, yeah. I'm pretty sure they're slavers and Vargr Gent's their 'property.' I recall sayin' as much when we first found him."
Peng coughs self-consciously, then adds: "I also recall suggestin' we hijack those a**holes ship out from under 'em, along with sketchin' out a plan on how to go about it. But I was voted down."
Peng scratches his bristly chin and finishes: "Still think it's doable."

"We don't know what the laws are like further out in this sub-sector." Gil says wiping his mouth, "Besides, there are many version of slavery, and if those jerks don't even recognize that Vargr are 'people' it might not even be slavery to them...just owning an animal, like a cat or dog. We need to be careful about local laws and mores as we move further out."
Gil stands, "So, what now? Are we going back to the hotel for the night, or just to pick up our bags and catch one of those hovercraft back to the island with the Starbase?"

Or an enter-par-nuer?"As Peng joins the general rising from the table, he adds: "As to slavery, it's true the locals don' seem to practice it. But said Jerks seem confident about gettin' their 'property' back, so I 'spect the locals don' oppose it, either."

OK Who's gonna phone home? Peng taps his earbud and says, "Yo. Sails. Got your ears on?"******************************************************* [OOC: I'm assuming our various communications devices can link into the local/planetary comm network, should we be out of normal transmission range of the ship. I also suspect that - while not free - this costs only a nominal fee and said fee will be automatically charged against the ship's account. Of course, this connection would not be at all secure. But Peng is mindful of this and doesn't intend to discuss state secrets . . . or possible future criminal acts . . . over the comm.]

OOC: Works for me. A small charge is applied to Clear Sails account. Dr Vargus' voice replies, "You bet Peng ol' buddy. You folks having a good time at the restaurant over in the Terminal Building? I wish I'd decided to come along with you. I'm getting hungry. You'll be back soon with a meal for me, right?"
"Oh, bye the bye, you have your keys and access codes, right? I've got all the hatches locked down...tight...and the automated defenses are on, so make sure you ping me, Peng ol' buddy, before you get too close, okay?", Vargus sounds cheerful and unworried. Locked down hatches isn't unusual, but automated defenses being on while parked on a Starport's tarmac is, and you could radio the access codes to the ship to unlock/turn off defenses without "pinging" the man on the bridge, so that's a little off, too...and then there is the bit about being in the Terminal Building, Vargus knows better.

Peng's eyebrows climb higher and higher as Vargus' spiel keeps going. Fiddling with his comm, Peng sets it so that Vargus' voice comes out of the unit's wrist speaker but input remains Peng's throat mike.
The rest of the party hears a tinny, slightly-falsetto version of the doctor's voice say:
" . . . have your keys and access codes, right? I've got all the hatches locked down...tight...and the automated defenses are on, so make sure you ping me, Peng ol' buddy, before you get too close, okay?"
Peng glances around at the others with a rather helpless expresssion, then answers their crewmate via his throat mike (very obviously pressing the small disk on his throat as he does so), "Uh, righto, 'Gus! Care to remind me what you wanted? 'Fraid I lost your note."
Disabling his mike, Peng hurriedly mutters, "He's actin' like we're just over in the terminal. Someone holdin' him at gunpoint, maybe?"
