[OOC: I would put this in the Out Of Character thread, except that it seems to be highly-relevant to the current IC action . . .Everything that happened before you (the original party) left town stands as is.
After you left town and the result is as follows (and no you never reached the dungeon)Ye Olde Rumour Mill So . . . it might be a good idea for the party to let themselves get hired by a particular merchant house, then buy themselves out of that contract later, should our goals diverge.Update: The previous PC party traveled out this direction ahead of the planned troops and were lead into an ambush by a turncoat Captain . . . I vaguely remember an exchange about this in which I guessed that the Captain was a turncoat and the response was something like, "That would be an interesting twist, wouldn't it?"" . . . and it turned out that the bandits were actually the assigned troops. The Captain was killed in the fighting and the survivors from the party got away and made it back, from the town troops with the merchant houses went out and cleaned up the mess. Executions were held and the party received a small reward for exposing the Captain and cutting the head off the snake. This was in the updates and you may have missed it. Y ep. I definitely missed this. I suspect it may have been added sometime after I last checked that thread. [snip of detailed fates of former party]
Nice to know that the nephews made it back okay. Up for another go: Sora [Damocleese], Deveuil (reptilian) Fighting Man CLERIC Richard /raikenclw and follower Josiah [Planchet] - Fighting Man - Henchman
I thought it was Josiah, but I see it should Planchet. Actually, it's both. In the previous iteration, I referred to both characters by personal name. I've mixed that up, this time around. I suppose I really should stick to just one type of name or the other for each, in order to avoid confusion. Therefore, henceforth they will return to being Sora and Josiah. Also - as noted most recently in the Out Of Character thread - while this iteration of Sora was at one point going to be a Fighting Man, I decided to go with a Cleric so as to not have him overshadowed by his own Henchman. Also noted elsewhere, if you want the ogre nephews and the equipment and help from the ogre you will need to approach him again. His nephews acquitted themselves well in battle, he got his stuff back and you helped bring down a bunch of turncoats, so he was well disposed towards the group and it currently only remaining representative Sora and henchman. Does "his stuff" include those fine knives he gave everyone? Because the ones that Sora and Josiah got are still listed on their respective personal equipment lists.
If my characters DID get to keep those knives, then I think sending one of them to the bar stabbed through a note might be an easy way to get us an interview.I have permission to run mormonyoyoman's characters in view of his health and they are there for the future. Noted.

[OOC: I would put this in the Out Of Character thread, except that it seems to be highly-relevant to the current IC action . . . AbsolutelySo . . . it might be a good idea for the party to let themselves get hired by a particular merchant house, then buy themselves out of that contract later, should our goals diverge. That may or may not be a good idea, but it is an option. It all depends on how serious you and Xur are about your stated goals, what option you pursue.Does "his stuff" include those fine knives he gave everyone? Because the ones that Sora and Josiah got are still listed on their respective personal equipment lists. Yes, again the other equipment he gave you is not automatic, only the personal items in your possession. The knives on the dead were returned, all survivors kept their knives. If my characters DID get to keep those knives, then I think sending one of them to the bar stabbed through a note might be an easy way to get us an interview. Nothing so dramatic is needed, all you would need to do is walk up to the bar when he is on duty and ask if there is a time that you could meet to talk about another expedition. He knows who you are and that you acquitted yourself honorably. Reputation is everything.

Nothing so dramatic is needed . . . Well, okay.
But this is PbP. Dramatic set pieces would appear to be a fit.
Also, the Knife & Paper might be useful for when he isn't on shift. Simply leaving a note is no guarantee it will get passed along. One with a fine [and likely quite recognizable] knife through it is a different matter.

If you think sticking a knife into the ogre's fine looking well-polished bar (of which he is so proud) is a good idea, you are certainly welcome to go for it. As for a note given to one of the ogre's family and/or employees not getting passed on, that is your assumption to make if you so choose. But, please insert drama whenever you feel it is appropriate.

Xur clears his throat, "Then I think I would like to stick to our goals and explore the massive ruins. AS very little is known about it, it would seem a fitting target. I am not interested in throwing my life away on a military like mission. My goal is set in stone and Chris has said he is interested too."

With a slightly puzzled expression, Sora looks over at Josiah, who gives him an indifferent shrug in response. Looking back toward the mage, Sora comments: "Massive ruins? I'm afraid I don't quite follow. Have the three of you . . ."Here Sora makes a little circling gesture with his hand, encompassing those seated around Xur's table. ". . . already established a goal?"

Baldric cranes his head back to scan the room for a barmaid, waving if he can catch one looking in his direction. "I can't speak for 'he who communes with the divine' here, but I've not even settled on what I want to drink." He grins and shrugs his narrow shoulders.
Christopher eyes his diminutive companion with mock displeasure, then chuckles before he also attempts to flag down a barmaid. "I fear we only beat you to the table by a matter of moments, Sora, so the dust of our arrival has barely settled. We've not gotten farther than swapping pleasantries and discussing possibilities at this point. Ruins are certainly of interest to me, but I'm not settled on anything as of yet."

Noting the glances around, an attentive young barmaid heads for the table and reaching them she inquires what they would like, either to eat or drink. The menu features a variety of roast meats, fresh baked breads, continual stew and other foods. In addition, there is a good selection of beers and ales along with some stronger spirits as well.
OOC: BTW This place is called The Laughing Ogre.
OOC: I have not been feeling too good the last few days and am running a low grade fever. So I will try to respond to your posts, but I am not doing much more than that for the time being. But please continue, and everyone read the rumors so that you know what all the options are. If none suit, I can dig up some more.

Sora orders an ale and Josiah a beer. Both decide to start with large bowls of "continual stew," along with a loaf of fresh bread each.
As everyone awaits receipt of their various orders, Sora says in a musing tone, "Yes, the rumors of those massive ruins are tempting. The group of which we were previously part attempted the journey there, but fell afoul of a turncoat Captain of mercenaries and his minions. Perhaps you've heard of the incident?"

"Sorry for the confusion, I was under the impression that Chris was more committed to the idea of the ruins than he was." Both Sora and Josiah shrug, then Sora says: "As I noted, the 'massive ruins' are certainly tempting. Perhaps they are too tempting? After all, someone paid that Captain to betray those headed there. So far as Josiah and I are aware, said Captain's true paymaster has yet to be revealed."

All of the food and drink have arrived and been distributed to each of you. Over near the fireplace a bard has taken up his lute and is currently singing. Per custom in a while he will start telling a mix of stories and news.

'" Oh a bard!" " I am utterly taken with bards" "C'mon guys let's get good seats" With that Xur runs across the bar and try's to sit as close as possible.

"My friend here--" he eyes Baldric "--has never found a mystery too great, nor one so insignificant, as to avoid catching his interest." He smiles and drops a hand on Baldric's shoulder. The halfling grins and raises his tankard.
They turn in their chairs to better listen to the bard.

Sora and Josiah also turn their attentions toward the bard, but neither feels any need to move closer. If the bard is any good, the hubbub will die away of it's own as others quiet to listen . . . and if he isn't any good, why bother moving closer?

Chris taps his foot, smiling over the crowd as they tune in to the bard's excellent music. Once the faster-paced songs come 'round, he'll join the dancing. If a partner presents herself or can be found, he'll happily dance with her. If not, he'll laugh and drag Baldric onto the floor and dance with the agile halfling, laughing and smiling with the sheer pleasure of relaxing and enjoying himself.

Sora doesn't try to dance [seeing no sense scaring everyone off the floor], instead waving Josiah out onto the floor. That worthy shyly hesitates for a moment, but then joins in with a will once a reel begins to form. When it's over, Josiah collapses back onto his bench in an exaggerated show of fatigue, in response to which display Sora quirks a sardonic brow.
Josiah leans over and mutters, "All the lassies here'll have local suitors. Don't want trouble."
