Ghost World, where the Dead and Barbarians Rule All!

What happens when the number of dead grows to the point that they overflow to the mortal world and wreak havok?

The Great War was 3000 years ago, many many died, so many that their souls overflowed an spilled out. They roam reality, killing and driving many insane. Sociaty broke down and only a few barbarian tribes survived.

Now: A few cities have sprung up in areas that the ghosts do not haunt but the fierce barbarian tribes harass ans attack these few areas of civilization , some looking for women and booty  while others still seek revenge for the destruction of the world.

Sea of Grass Berserkers


These barbarians shun normal weapons and any tech at all. They are fused with the metal of fallen foe's metal gear in a ceremony celebrating their dark god. This creates weapons on their arms (2 attacks as short sword) and bits of armor coating the rest of their body( AC as chain shirt). The warriors are tough( 2-4 HD) and ably lead (warlords 6-12 HD ) They are a huge threat to civilization of any persuasion. True sons of chaos , they roam far and wide looking for sacrifices and metal they can fuse with. One can bargain with them if they are offered the equivalent of plate armor.

Hidden Rock Beast



This best is truly terrifying. Found in mountainous region, this creature is a master of stealth. With the stealth and backstab ability of a 10th L thief, It sneaks up and pounces, appearing as a rock till it strikes. It has the ac of a plate ted man

The Solid Ones("Firmies")

while these ex adventures are both dead and partially ghost,the are quite solid. They retain all of their abilities, the spellcasters among them always have the last full memorization and cannot  change them nor need spellbooks or holy symbols. While they have comeback at what ever Level they were when they died, they are vulnerable to spells, weapons and any thing that would effect the undead that they are. The lower level ones are foot soldiers, mid level are the sgt.s and the high level are leaders

The Commmon("farmers")

These are the ghosts of the common man. They are at most 3 hit die and can be turned as zombies. a very few will have inteligance the reast will merely have a very basic intellect(Int 2-5)

The Dogs of the Dead

dogs were the most common pet by far before the ghosts overran the world. While many followed their masters into the afterlife and then returned, they will operate in pacts and never w other non dog  ghosts. They are about 2-5 Hit Die w wolf stats however they are non corporeal except for their teeth

These are the ultimate leaders of the dead. They are highly intelegant(12-16) and poweful (7-29 Hit Die)

they are most often found leading the lesser ghosts into battle, they are rarely encountered alone. The are incorporeal and have a deadly attack. Reaching into the chest and squeezing the heart for 3-6 d6. Luckily they are a little cowardly and will flee a fight they are losing. groups of 6 will form a clan, the basic unit with any where from 20 to 1000's of followers. Clans do not cooperate w each other.

The Big Picture

As I have been writing these up this morning, I see a couple of themes that run through the One Threads, as I like to call them, barbarians and pseudo-zombies.This one has those themes but mankind is on the cutting edge of reclaiming the world but only w the help of the barbarians. A game of negotiation w them so the light can be brought back. Much less bleak in that the crisis is nearly over and there is hope

The OutKasts

Not a true barbarian tribe, they are made up of criminals, slaves, thieves and yes a few barbarian rejects for other tribes. To join the tribe you must eat human flesh. What they lack in skill at arms, they make up for in ferocity.

The Outkasts are secretly talking to the possesed humans. they are about to sighn a deal to team up. this must be stopped
