I was really into board games at that time and the only game that I know had it was Star Fleet Battles which came out around '77

None that I have ever heard of, that is a very interesting system.

This is amazing! Now I have to run aerial combat!

Edit: I cna't imagine ever using this, but it's really cool.  Has anyone ever used it or a similar system?

I have never had any particular interest in simulating anything in combat. I'm okay with it being pretty abstract, each roll representing...well, whatever you want, really. But this has really piqued my interest. Wish I had more experience, guess I'll have to simulate it.
