Probably one of the most modern piece I've put up, but I truly love seaside towns and cities. This is for all of us that put way-more-detail-than-we-need-to for those wild ports we love! Quote: Venice: The Dogana and the San Giorgio Maggiore - JMW Turner, 1834

Quote:The sword offered here for sale was collected in the battle field of Omdurman, 1896. It has a flat steel blade 24 ½ inches long, grip bound with braided rattans (or a similar material) and with a long flared pommel. The scabbard is leather in the shape of a classical Kaskara sword from the area. Total length 35 inches. Very good condition. Damaged scabbard tip. The most interesting part of this sword is an old label attached to it and inscribed ( handwriting): Sword found on the field of Omdurman given to me by …..(??). An historically interesting item. www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=2288Omdurman (standard Arabic Umm Durmān أم درمان) is the largest city in Sudan and Khartoum State, lying on the western banks of the River Nile, opposite the capital, Khartoum. The battle referred to is actually most likely the Battle of Omdurman (2 September 1898), wherein an army commanded by the British General Sir Herbert Kitchener defeated the army of Abdullah al-Taashi, the successor to the self-proclaimed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. Kitchener's campaign had begun on 12 March 1896, but only reached Omdurman in September 1898.
