I have been vetoed, the players prefer 2e over OD&D which is fine. I have learned what I need to and can adjust my game. They wanted the story-driven games of yore, which I must say, I miss those too. I was worried that they were going to force me to run a published setting, but I was able to keep my own. I just told them that it will be easier for me to prep and to use my own world than somebody else's. I'd rather do writing than research.
So, I went over the different kingdoms in my world, nothing too descriptive, just a quick discussion so that I know what to prep for.
Adams: A Welsh kingdom ran by money and trade.
Alora: A neutral country that is based on Spain.
Baulk: A haunted land based on Romania
Durn: Where they have been adventuring in. Traditional Medieval English setting.
Fayette: A French kingdom which is more advanced than everyone else. Technologically they have the musket but light arms are still preferred.
Mevania: An almost independant state of the Empire of Leodium which is Roman but in decline as the Government has become too weak. Mevania is based on Italy.
Silbowitz: Once apart of the Russian-like Empire of Gukovo, but cut off by Fayette, this has become a German-like Kingdom
Voldov: A viking-like land of raiders.
Funny enough, there was one player who was interested in Mevania, but the majority chose Voldov which I didn't expect. They had expressed interest in more traditional D&D games, but Voldov is far from Traditional.

Is your play history & age similar to that of your players or are they mostly younger than you? FWIW I think Voldov sounds like a lot of fun and I can see why they might think of that as Traditional.

I am still tinkering with the cultures, I know that I want one to be more Arabian in taste, so it is still a work in progress. I had originally drawn up Voldov as a source of conflict and it never even crossed my mind that players would want to start there. I designed Durn to be peaceful now but surrounded by threats; you know, a safe place to begin a campaign. The more I think about Voldov, the more attractive beginning the campaign there becomes. I can't wait! In regards to my players, a few of them are charter members of the original club, but most are younger than we are. With the exception of one new player, I had the honor of introducing them to table-top Role-Playing. This year my kids started playing and once in a while, they have their friends come over to play too. I owe a great debt to The Perilous Dreamer, he taught me how to DM for younger players without losing any of the worlds sharp edges which I want to preserve. I always fancied myself as a DM for Adults, but I actually have more fun toning it down.

Thank you for compliment, and the hyperbole.

You should mash some other cultures into your base Idea. For example have the french kingdom's religion be a fantasy version of Islam and think about how that would make it diff than "canon"
