At the time it was going out of the way to punish players that didn’t hold to the story or pissed off an hostile NPC over something stupid that you weren’t aware of. So I went to the extreme and coddled my players in reaction. That would explain the people who do not like DM run games, I do not understand "punishing" players. I think that there are at least 2 types of DMs that most people would call killer. The first type is as you said, deliberate. But I was a different type, merciless. The difference is subtle but true. I ran a game 100% influenced by " Thieves World" books, a gritty urban story that brutalized the "PCs" of the book. Low level(first through 3rd) that had frequent death at 1 st level but decreasing chance of death at 2nd, in fact it was a huge difference. you had about a 80% chance of death at first , dropping off to about 20% at second and 5% chance at third , where you would stay for a very , very long time. My initial "Mysantia(the city)" games were hugely popular at my community collage. I caused at least 3 people to flunk out because they wouldn't go to class, I was fine because I ran at my schedule. I regularly had games of about a dozen players. The Peeps would hang out in our gaming spot exclusivel so they didn't miss aa game. It was hugely flattering. We all had come off the "Monty Haul stuff and this was the first low level game that any of us had played. I look back and wonder how I dd it. I have reconnected w a player form the old days and he said his stories of my games revolved around earning a ball of rice, let alone magic. Ah the good old days'

I realized the above was only half the story. When other people ran I was a disruptive and very poor player. I brought my dming with me as I killed other PCs and chopped the game off. In the first of my 2 characters cloaked infamy . I started a soup kitchen my starting money. In the second, thanx to very good rolls on my part, I did something extremely appropriate and proceeded to kill the entire party of 8 or so w my ax .. People stopped running. AS good a dm as I was I was about the worst player I could imagine, I'm much much better now, with my wife saying I was always playing Capt, America, and am coming of a very very long string of lawful good characters that were hugely party friendly and dm safe,, most were wizs.I think I was subconsciously "killing "my my fellow dms games by being a compleat and total asshat. Words do not suffice in how horrible I was.

wow did I derail my own thread LOL "101 things about mao" lol Now it is up to you to get it back on track! The old house rule I had the most fun with is the double move one. Quite simply the DM allowed for double movement. A player was threatening another player in a huge dungeon where the party was relatively far apart. I picked up my miniature of the 8th level monk(Libra) that I was playing and put it down next to the offending player. The DM picked up my mini and put it back where it was. I calmly enplaned that I had 8 inches of movement left after I place my mini again next to the butt hole I was angry with. Everyone except offender laughed about how far I could go. He was terrified of my monk and backed off the threatening behavior. One of my all time fav D&D moments.
