The idea for this post stems from this exchange up in the thread Board Status - Year 004 with this post. Here is the exchange of comments which explain why this is being posted. I didn't attend college, so you have me there. Among the four sampled boards including ours we are in fourth place by a small amount. Moving into third is very doable, and even moving in to second I expect to happen over the next year. Matching the board in first place by this one criteria is a matter of longevity, growth in membership, interesting topics and growth in the core of very active posters in no particular order. The analytics available will not really let me break it down further than that. It is my opinion that interesting topics is the key to the other three. Given that we have a fraction of the membership of the other three boards, I am very pleased with where we are at and that we are as close as we are. The board that has double our number of posts per thread also has a membership 45 times larger than ours. The board we trail by a little over 1 post per thread has a membership of 3.5 times ours. That gap in posting can be easily closed if we continue to build on last month. So we're "fighting" rather far above our weight class, but still doing fairly well. To use the full range of current professional boxing weight classes we are a Light Flyweight (2nd Level) and we are being compared to two Bantamweights (5th Level) and a Lightweight (9th Level) out of a total of 17 Levels. theRPGSite is a Super Featherweight (8th Level) ENWorld is a Welterweight (11th Level) RPGNet is a Middleweight (13th Level) OK these are all estimates, I am intrigued now so I will have to work up the whole hierarchy and post it. I wanna see this, you should start a thread just for this. <slowly pounds forehead against nearest wall . . .> Oh, no. What have I started . . . You asked for it, you got it!

Over the next few weeks I want to add forums into this Level Lists and I am thinking about starting a blog to, initially at least, review these forums. Go over things like why did some of the boards shutter their doors and why are some of them the size they are despite how many years they've been around. Things best discussed on a blog. So if I decide to do the reviews I will start the blog and posts an announcements here, but for now I am just doing the whole what level is your forum based on Total Posting. I might do other rankings based on membership or other criteria.

When (and if) I start reviewing forums, that should be hosted solely on a blog. A forum would not want to host negative comments about other forums and a review to be an honest review would have to talk about the good and the bad, so that would really have to be done on a blog.

Thank you, glad you liked it. I took several different lists of weight class and expanded it to get 21 levels. I had a lot of fun doing it. I need to add another 8-10 forums too it. It kind of works out of us too. We will be 4 years old in January and we are 4th level and we will be 4th (slim possibility of 5th level) come January.

Oooohhhh! I see what you did there. If this forum's posters are active enough we could level up by our anniversary date of January 11th, 2019 and move from 4th level to 5th level.

That is the most informative thing I've seen about the RPG forums and you are right it would make a good starting point for a series of blog posts.

Harry Wolf , I tried to leave a comment, but it said that only staff can. My comment, regarding Petal Throne, is below Great comment! There are literally hundreds of starter threads they could make. Toss out a few every other day, and then participate themselves. I think the whole IP think is the other problem, they are protecting it so much they are killing it. Please try posting again, you should be able to if you are logged into Google.

Harry Wolf , I tried to leave a comment, but it said that only staff can. My comment, regarding Petal Throne, is below Tekumel/EPT is an esoteric subniche of a subniche of a niche in our hobby. I can't imagine the dedicated fan community -- that is, those who have more than a passing curiosity in the setting -- can really spread its attention around too much at once. The Tekumel Discussion Group (Yahoo group), the descendant of the Blue Room mailing list, has more hardcore "scholarly" discussion of setting minutiae, at least as I remember it. I haven't been a list member since the early 2000s, but it still looks active and lively.
There are also flurries of activity on the ODD74 (Original D&D Discussion) board, which include more of what you mention in your quote -- EPT/Tekumel as it relates to the early development and play of OD&D.

The Yahoo groups are so limited and difficult to use and all the posts are in one long thread I gave up on them a long time ago. At one time I belonged to 12-15 but the difficulty of following a conversation or going back to a specific spot to re-read things made me swear off them.

I think that ways the forum and the current IP holder has failed to engage with the fans explains why 11 Yahoo Groups with 60-800 members each did not rally around the Tekumel Forum. I don't remember, but there may have been an old Tekumel forum and it was deleted. That is never fan friendly. Just as the old Arduin forum was deleted.
