We're Blogging our hearts out. We ran Greg Svenson's Tonisborg dungeon again.. It is a very old Dungeon. David Megarry was able to locate the key to Level 10 a couple days ago. If you want to know just how old Tonisborg is, The dungeon level key implies that Clerics use Cunning as their primary stat. www.secretsofblackmoor.com/blog/greyhawk-meets-blackmoorWow, I remember reading a thread about cunning as a stat, that is a really old dungeon. What is Svenson's campaign name? I wonder how many campaigns there are that are originally form the Twin Cities that predate January 1974 and what are there names? Good questions for secretsofblackmoor, have an exalt Harry Wolf.

Well, not in the beginning. Snider had his sci fi campaign in 72.

Well, not in the beginning. Snider had his sci fi campaign in 72. Yeah that is what I was looking for was all the campaigns that started before January 1974. What was the name of Snider's campaign and weren't there two Snider's? Also did Greg Svenson's Tonisborg predate Greyhawk?

There is no way to know what all the campaigns are that began before Greyhawk.
The most likely would be Richard Snider's, his rules adaptation from Blackmoor is excerpted in the recent video, where we show his Snider Variation dragon rules. If you read FFC, Arneson says that Snider was the one who created the multi colored dragons in Blackmoor. Certainly Gary and others were discussing it in Fantasy literature fanzines, but Snider is the first to use it in an RPG as far as we can tell. Of course, a good hard document to counter that claim, and we would gladly alter our perspective.
His brother John had a Sci FI campaign, we are told it was an RPG. It began in October of 72, it is noted in Corner of the Table Top, thus there is a hard date for it. This would be a month before Gary Gygax see's Blackmoor and Dungeon!. John called it Star Empires. Arneson called it Stellar VII.
There are likely others as well. We will keep digging.

Pretty incredible stuff, maybe someday it will all be made publicly available. We all like to kid ourselves, "if I'd been there, I'd have saved everything!" But the truth is most of us saved very little of our own stuff.

Too many to count.

But the truth is most of us saved very little of our own stuff. I wish I still had my first two D&D campaign settings that I made in 1977 and 1978, as well as my first Traveller setting from 1978. My ex-wife sold these all off with my first rpg collection in 1984.

The earliest gaming material I still have, is my third campaign D&D campaign setting from 1987, a decade after i started playing, and my second Traveller campaign setting from 1985-86 when I was in stationed at Yongsan in Seoul, Korea.

Yes, Korean as well, Though I'm not so good with it as I once was. Yes I was in the military. While I was at Yongsan, I was attached to Headquarters, Headquarters Company, Eighth United States Army for meals, rations, and quarters, only. I was not under the eighth army administrative jurisdiction. Also attached were the Eight United States Army Honor Guard Battalion. A Gurkha battalion from the 10th Princess Mary's own Gurkhas Rifle regiment, based out of Hong kong at the time, and the Republic of Korea Third Army Honor Guard, and some MI guys. I didn't stay in the quarters or at HQ often, and took a jip in Itaweon just off of fish alley.
I can't even find the unofficial eighth army song on youtube.

Yongsan! We fought for a chance to travel to the Land of the Big BX, even if it meant dropping off materials at The Line.

If or when you have time can you start a few threads and share these two campaigns with us? I could make you a sub-forum for them. Did you have them named?

Sure, you can start a thread for Etrania, I'll dig out my binder, photograph a few of the ancient maps, and add some notes to threads about this D&D fantasy campaign setting, which was first started in 1985.
For the Traveller, you can create a folder for the Frontier Sector campaign setting. This was also created in late 1985 as well, and features an unremarkable area located on the Southern Border of the Empire of the First Imperium. This setting was really inspired by Isaac Asimov's Foundation series of science fiction books, as well as Star Viking. Other inspirations include the novels of Poul Anderson, Andre Norton, and Gordon R. Dickson, Hal Clement, Raymond Bradbury, Frederik Pohl, Arthur C. Clarke, Larry Niven, John Varley, and Anne McCaffrey.

I often see people talking about how dungeon masters have to be fair, Well, as a DM I might say something like, " You see large claw marks all over the walls and there seems be a lot of soot on the ceiling as if a large fire had gone through here... Are you sure you want your first level party to continue down this passageway? Well, if the hint is ignored, so be it! Gave you chance to put 2 and 2 together and that WAS being fair. You can't be more fair than that. You give the players the info they need to make a good decision; but the decision, good or bad, is theirs and they have to own that. That is fair and it is good DMing. You give the party all the information they need to make the right decision and if they don't that is on them. Anytime the DM says, "Are you sure you want to do that?" you proceed at your own risk. A lot players want to accuse the DM of being mean and adversarial when they should be looking in the mirror and asking themselves why they were so stupid.

Glad you enjoy the blog. We're certainly not experts on game design, but we are definitely into helping new gamers find old ideas and old gamers find new ideas.
