Here is an interesting post concerning clerics from a blog I follow called 'Hmmm Marquis' by Mastered by Marquist. He posts on the Absolute Tabletop FB group in which I am a member & he has come up with some various interesting setting concepts. He mainly runs 5e D&D & Lamentations of the Flame Princess, thus a lot of his content is aimed at those systems but much of it is system agnostic thus usable in other games.

Interesting read but disagree w his premise other than getting rid of Turn Undead I didn't mind it myself as I've never been fond of the Cleric class but his perception of it seems rooted in modern versions of what the cleric has morphed into compared to how it originated as. I never cared for the whole blunt weapons thing it seemed a weird concept to begin with and I often house-ruled that bit out. So anything that can twaek the concept intrigues me and I look forward to what he will do with the project.

There is ALWAYS room for more char classes IMNSHO. I just don't want them complex. But the more the merrier.

You are correct mao the basics are solid but I'll never be a fan of Clerics and that is just my opinion. You are also correct that there are always more room for more character classes. Needless complexity should be avoided which is why I try to limit any complexity when adding anything new to may games.

I am not a fan of that proposal, but I did like colinouchou variant cleric writeup. I don't get the hate for clerics.

I am not a fan of that proposal, but I did like colinouchou variant cleric writeup. I don't get the hate for clerics. I think a lot of it stems from the eventual evolution of the Cleric from being a fighting-priest to a heal-bot in later editions. My issue with them was they seem to be magic-using knights with blunt weapons and when Paladins were added the Cleric was turned into a more spell focused class. I have zero issue with the class except that they should be linked to militant cults and allowed to have bladed weapons. Though I'll still have Clerics in my games, I'll also be using the cleric minus the Turn Undead ability and more religious toned spells as the basis for a home-brewed Warrior-Mage class. [ Update: thanks to Q Man's catch I edited & clarified the above post.]

Oops I need to clarify my post. There still will be a Cleric but I'll also be using it as the basis to build my Warrior-Mage home-brewed class.
