Grimbane and Grimdeath also have no interest in a mule at this time. Grimbane will buy four more filled waterskins, he has been talking to Togork who will carry the additional weight.

If you are taking the river boat subtract the 2sp for each person & the mounts/livestock. You get onto what is an oared barge with its sail stowed, outside you are three other travelers with cloaks on and their packs next to them, all three are armed ans armored. None of them show any interest in you, but will break into conversation with the barges crew & it seems they all know each other. Your mounts & mules are tethered near the mast with what looks like cargo near the front and back. The crew row at a slow & steady pace against the current as you head north along the Upper Dorgand. One either side of the river are a mix of low rolling hills often topped with stands of trees and with fields being cleared by what looks to be a mix of humans and Hobbits. You also notice some fishermen out trying to bring in the afternoon catch & you spy a group og Half-Goblins with hoods pulled over their heads in the shallows near the left back on a rocky patch of the river cleaning their catch with a makeshift smoking setup, the youngest waves as you pass.

[OOC: Two mules but no rations (the others only mentioned needing mounts), then? Three mules total, if Sora pays 30 silver? Can we get any more, if we agree to take a local along to bring back the mules if we don't emerge from the dungeon after a reasonable amount of time?] No, but they are willing to sell the third for 10gp + the cost of tack at half price used (8gp). [OOC: It doesn't appear as if Sora will need to spend any coin on a third mule, since only "Harry" and the mage [?] accompanying him appear interested in mounts. That means no local coming along to bring extra mules back, either. In short the "mounts and mules tied to the mast" translates to Sora's warhorse, Josiah's mule and the two borrowed ones.] Sora and Josiah [at Sora's prompting] wave back at the half-Goblin kid on the shore. Sora assesses the arms, armor and other equipment of the individuals talking with the barge operators. Sora and Josiah's weapons are well-used but also well-maintained, as is their studded leather armor. What is the type/condition of what the apparent mercs are carrying? [OOC: All these various folk are human, correct? I'm assuming the bargemen are male - upper body strength being essential for the job - but how about the apparent mercs?]

[The Half-Goblin youth smiles at Sora & Josiah, before being scolded & you assume told to get back to work; which he promptly does.]Sora assesses the arms, armor and other equipment of the individuals talking with the barge operators. Sora and Josiah's weapons are well-used but also well-maintained, as is their studded leather armor. What is the type/condition of what the apparent mercs are carrying? [The armor is worn but in decent repair, their weapons are in good repair. They are armed with long bows, daggers & axes. They have bushy beards and weathered skin. They look to be hunters heading to the edge of the Raven Wood - that is the impression you got.][OOC: All these various folk are human, correct? I'm assuming the bargemen are male - upper body strength being essential for the job - but how about the apparent mercs?] [Yes they are all human, mostly pale with blonde or auburn hair and of strong builds, though there are two with mocha colored skin and short wiry black hair. Each of the bargemen have a bundle of weapons stowed near them in case of attack. A mix of axes, swords & hammers. I answered the rest above.]

Interjecting into a pause in the conversation between the hunters and bargemen, Sora says, "I'm with the Order of Saint Beoshar. My companions and I are investigating the disappearance of the Prince. If anyone knows anything interesting, I would appreciate that information."

I must have been typing the text brackets incorrectly.

Interjecting into a pause in the conversation between the hunters and bargemen, Sora says, "I'm with the Order of Saint Beoshar. My companions and I are investigating the disappearance of the Prince. If anyone knows anything interesting, I would appreciate that information." "Hmmm let me see sir ... from what we know he and his party tracked some beastmen from the village up yonder up to the ruins but never returned. We were part of the party that tracked his movement north after he didn't return to Lost Hope (He said it as Lost Hope not Last Hope) but we were set upon by beastmen as it was late and only a handful of us returned alive", says the older of three men. The others concur, and another adds, "hrrn you don' wan' to go up there, I swear there is a 'orrible taint upon it and the land around it is right unnatural. It makes my skin crawl it does. I'll ne'er go up near that 'orible place again, no ne'er again". The last shakes his head in agreement and spit over the side emphasizes his disgust.
The last one then chimes in, "I heard that there might be a dragon dwelling near the ruins. Some folks have said that they saw a large shadow passed over their homestead and some of their flock has gone missing, but it could be beastmen as I've yet to see dragon sign in the region. If it is true it might be flying through the region and flew over the mountains. Oh, I heard their are a lot of statues within the upper lever of that vile pit".

Wonderful. Just wonderful. Mulvigg sets up marvelous tests for his faithful.
Aloud, Sora says, "I thank you kindly for the information. Just out of curiosity, do you know the particular type of 'beastmen' which the Prince was chasing? I don't believe anyone has ever said. It might be important."
[OOC: "lot of statues within the upper level" = Basilisk? Cockatrice? Medusa?]

They 'ad wicked weopons they did, sharp 'nough to rend armor and the flesh beneath it as if it was nuttin. Luckily they are rarely out during the day unlike the goat-beastmen that also huant the wood. But the Goat-Beastmen stay east of the river but have been seen occasionally to the south east around the inner edges of the Wood", says the second man with darker beard with auburn highlights.
"Hmm that is correct. One thing the Beastmen didn't come out of the tower proper but from around its base as it sits upon a overgrown hillock. There might be another way in but of the party went in but only one fled from it but died as a beastmen among those who ambushed us cleaved him in two before he could tell us what occurred from within that vile place. Before the group went in deeper into the ruins a scout mentioned statues in alcoves and some rooms, but that was before the party split up to check out the ruins and the area around the base. That is all I rightly know sir", says the older man with a graying beard.
To your OOC - could be or could not be.

[OOC: "lot of statues within the upper level" = Basilisk? Cockatrice? Medusa?] OCC: Yes Sora is one of those players who can't resist making suggestions to the DM about how to mess up the party. My dad would always act on those suggestions and the player in question always bore the brunt of their own suggestions.

Gwindeth, Grimbane and Grimdeath ponder this new information from the boat people and Togork just wants some battle to make life worth living.

The Half-Goblin sees this & waves anew, the elder Half-Goblins shake their head & mutter to themselves about distractions of youth (or you imagine) as they continue their work.

However, in this particular case, I was polling my fellow players to see if they thought the quoted descriptive text from our GM was a hint that we might be facing such monsters in the initial dungeon level. The fact that the descriptive text our munificent GM next posted mentioned that these statues were standing in niches leads me to think that they *are* actually statues and not ex-adventurers. Then again, maybe the GM added this qualifier simply to make us - the players - relax a bit. We could double/triple/quadruple/etc think this all night . . . ]

Axel is playing some sort of game with rune cards - or maybe doing something suspiciously magickly. (Never trust these sorts of kids.) Hunter is snoring and passing wind.
