What have you done with a Gelatinous Cube outside of it being part of he cleaning crew in the standard dungeon corridor? Anyone have something to share that they did that threw their players for a loop?
I love to use Gelatinous Cubes, sometimes in multiples. One of the ones that was a lot of fun was when they encountered one in the wilderness that had either escaped from or was released from a dungeon into the wild. Instead of the normal 1000 cubic feet it was over 50,000 cubic feet and growing steadily. They had a really rough time of it, since as it got bigger it had achieved sentience and a steadily growing level of intelligence. In the process of killing it they started a forest fire that burned for 2d20 days (32 days in this case).

In one of my beginner-level dungeons, there was a complex created entirely of 10' square rooms, although the goblins living there had knocked out a few walls so some chambers were bigger. The goblins had lured a gelatinous cube to a room, and trapped it there. They then had levers to open the doors from the outside, and used it to unleash on unsuspecting invaders (aka player characters) Here is a picture of the player's map When they were fighting, the goblins were chanting "The cube! The cube! The cube!" Also, in another dungeon I had a player walk right into a cube. I rule that cubes don't attack, they just engulf and hit automatically like an implacable wall. My players were in mortal fear of them

I had a player that filled his moat around his castle with Gelatinous Cubes and used a spell he created to keep it from evaporating in the hot sun.

Makofan that is pure evil genius. Worthy of Tucker's kobolds.

That was cool, makofan! For some reason that map made me think of Pac-Man...

They can be very tasty, if you let one devour a couple of berry patches, freeze, shatter and eat.

I used one as part of a trap once ... removing treasure items from an alter triggered a trapdoor in the ceiling to open and drop the cube on those in front of the alter.

I'm picturing a stationary cube hanging out somewhere like the monolith in 2001...but maybe it's worshipped or respected, and sometimes the locals feed troublemakers or criminals to it.

Anyone have something to add to this thread? I am thinking there are a whole lot of novel things that could be done.

I have been kicking around some ideas about the ecology of Gelatinous Cubes. When they get to 10' High by 10' Wide by 11' Long they spawn 172,800 baby Gelatinous Cubes. At this size they can be eaten by many monsters because they don't have the powers of a mature cube, those only gradually develop as they grow. So they immediately try to squeeze into every available crack or crevasse that they can find. By the time they grow to 1' by 1' by 1' or 1000 cubic inches they are no longer edible by most monsters but there are a number of hazard they still have to watch out for and this is all instinctual. At this size they can still squeeze into tiny places or that is 1" by 1" by 1000 inches long. At this size they are now able to eat oozes, molds and other such creatures if they encounter them.

Gelatinous Cubes may be safely eaten if topped with sugar-free Cool Whip and if using a stainless steel (highly polished) spoon. They may be liquefied by putting them in the microwave. They may be restored if sponsored by the Jack Benny Program.

When the Gelatinous Cube reach 10' High by 10' Wide by 11' Long they have an extra 172,800 cubic inches - 120" x 120" x 12" = 172,800 cubic inches = 172,800 one cubic inches babies. Same size litter every time.

I didn't do nothing to it, see? I told you, see? It was there in the dungeon when I left, see, copper? It was just slowly sliming about, see? Now get them lights off me, see?

Oh I like this. This is awesome and they can eat the other cleaning crew members. I also like the massive numbers spawned too, "172,800 baby Gelatinous Cubes". Don't fall into a pit of these things.

Some great ideas here, I think the most creative thing I ever did with them was put them at the bottom of pit traps and they feed on whatever falls in.

This forum and TPD are stretching my imagination into a larger more useful frame.

OK combining this with the berry patch idea, explains why they are safe to eat, you use the 172,800 baby Gelatinous Cubes. This also a great idea and I will use it in my game. I will bet these things can be a real nuisance. Imagine trying to sleep and these things crawl all over you and start trying to digest you.
