The ‘Ruins of Grimhold’ is another of my mini-settings that I am developing – that may or may not end up being fused onto either my ‘Worlds of Xôðûn or Skârn’. All I do know is that I wanted to create three potential region mini-settings that fit the standard Original Edition D&D tropes. Where as the ‘Ruins of Dorgand’ is a dark fantasy themed setting and the ‘Wælfāgland – The Blood-Stained Land’ is inspired by Germano-Nordic themed Trudvang and Folk/Viking/Pagan Metal music; the ‘Ruins of Grimhold’ is inspired by the art of Mike Ploog (& Wizards film), Vaughn Bodē, Bill Willingham & Barry Blair’s ‘Elflord’ comics.
The ‘Ruins of Grimhold’ is more of a gonzo setting – bordering on the campy. It also takes some thematic inspiration from the manga ‘Made in Abyss’. Of the three mini-settings it is the most likely to be fused into the ‘World of Xôðûn’. The following is an example of the art that inspired it:
The Ruins of Grimhold are located in a hilly regain of the Vôlkazen Vale, which lies between the Peaks of Vôl and Kazen Mountains, thus giving the Vale its name. Grimhold used to be known as the Dwarf city of Ironhold. To the south lies the great elfin realm of Ithalrond (Wood Heart) and west of the Peaks of Vôl, lies the human Kingdom of Pengarth.
Nobody knows why Grimhold fell, as up until a few years ago trade had been strong between Ironhold, Ithalrond and Pengarth. Humanoids raids have become more frequent, whether they led to the fall of Ironhold or were an effect of the fall with Dwarf patrols no longer policing the mountains. Rumors are rampant, ranging from the city being overrun by Dwarf Skeletons, humanoids raiding from them or it being the home to some great worm or demonic being.
Adventurers flood the region every spring to brave the ruins only to never be seen again, except the rare sole survivor – wounded, at times raving of horrors but usually in possession of a few pieces of Dwarf relics.
