How much time do you need to prepare to ref a game of OD&D? Are you one of those guys who can just wing it and fly by the seat of your pants at the drop of a hat or do you need 16-20 hours or more of prep time for a four hour game or do you fall somewhere in the middle?

For me it's "Gimme an hour and then I am ready to go" I just need a little bit of time to get my mind in the game and then I can run a game.

I need about 10-15 minutes per hour of game time to get organized and make quick notes that I can refer to.

For OD&D I'd only need an hour.

Once I know my world, I will pretty much listen to my players. Their paranoia begets better ideas than I could ever imagine.

I used to be a huge seat of the pants guy, but a min maxing player inspred me to add a lot more detail so prep time varies from a few min. to several days

If I can't prep, I can't prep man. If I'm busy, I'm busy. I mean … simple as that. It ain't about that... I mean it's... It's not about that... At all. You know what I'm saying I mean... But it's...it's easy … to, to talk about... It's easy to sum it up when you're just talking about prep. We're sitting in here, and I'm supposed to be the referee, and we in here talking about prep. I mean, listen, we're talking about prep, not a game, not a game, not a game, we talking about prep. Not a game. Not, not … Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last. Not the game, but we're talking about prep, man. I mean, how silly is that? … And we talking about prep. I know I supposed to be there. I know I'm supposed to lead by example... I know that... And I'm not.. I'm not shoving it aside, you know, like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I do. I honestly do... But we're talking about prep man. What are we talking about? Prep? We're talking about prep, man. [laughter from the media crowd] We're talking about prep. We're talking about prep. We ain't talking about the game. [more laughter] We're talking about prep, man. When you come to the table, and you see me play, you see me play don't you? You've seen me give everything I've got, right? But we're talking about prep right now. We talking about pr... [Interrupted].

Is that Charlie Sheen hiding behind one of the twins? Why would you say that? Was Charlie Sheen behind Allen Iverson?

Who?
Nah, I thought you were trying to do a spoof of someone on speed. Or Gracie Allen. My faux pas.

I could do T&T off the seat of my pants (and I have on many occasions), so I chose the first option. I don't know OD&D so that would be longer (I'd have to read all the rules first). I could do The Arduin Adventure with an hour of prep, maybe less (never tried).

I am always ready to run OD&D at the drop of a hat, including creating a brand new world on the fly.
