Do any of you have a The Philosopher's Stone in your campaign and if so how big of a part does it play and how do you run it? I have been doing a bit of world building on the side and I am considering putting a The Philosopher's Stone in the world and was curious as to what other's have done.
The usual takes on it are I am looking for a way to do something different with the concept, something unexpected.

I have a philosopher's stone in my long-neglected superheroes campaign. Naturally it is based on, and has the powers of, the stone used by the multiple-personalitied Dr Alchemy/Mr Element from the 1956-1985 Flash comic.

This is a major Artifact IMC and wars have been fought over possession of it.

Mighty Darci You could go for a kind of James Bond medieval scheme: the Stone transmutes gold into dirt or iron, and a villain desires it or uses it to blackmail wealthy parties into paying him a tithe, otherwise he will transmute all their gold and leave them penniless and helpless.

That thing has to be destroyed, they will just take it out on the peasants.

Not sure who you are quoting, but it is crazy that they think mercury is a base metal. Seems to me that mercury should be a very valuable sorcerous metal, highly sought after by mages and wizards.

That is one nasty item. Good idea, but that is not doing anything for me.

I think mercury is considered base because it is a liquid and you cannot make coins out of it and as a liquid it could easily be lost more so than solids. Now making mercury a solid and mint friendly would turn it valuable.

You put Mercury coins in a treasure and when it is looted and jostled too much it sets off the trap and the Mercury coin vaporizes and kills everyone.

It seems to me that a Philosopher's Stone would be a super powerful artifact that is constantly sought after by powerful people and a bone of contention between rival faction or kings or mages. IMC artifact somewhat have a mind of their own, in that, they do not stick around (no one can truly possess an artifact) and they may refuse to work for anyone who offends them.

I would like to say that I have developed notes for a campaign centered around the discovery of the Philosopher's Stone, a villain who had it stolen after it was found, and options for sandbox style play depending on how the campaign has developed BUT.... ....work has been stupid busy for the last few months and I have not done any of that. I have found some links that I am going to read for further information and see what develops. I still think it's an idea worth pursuing and could be very cool. For the time being, still in progress....

I would love to have a Philosopher's Stone. Buy a rocky piece of ground somewhere and all of a sudden you discovered the richest gold mine in the world.

Be interesting to throw in a Philosopher's Stone and if it is used often it imparts the Midas touch. That is, it is a cursed item if you are greedy.
