I love playing backgammon but I'm barely better than an amateur at it, ditto for chess and checkers.
Mille Bornes is my favorite card game, Yahtzee for dice.
My favorite family board game is Sorry! or its inspiration Parcheesi.
Favorite beer-n-pretzels wargame is either Risk or AH's Monsters Menace America depending upon the number of players available.

One of our favorite things in life is having gamed with all our daughters and now grandmonkeys. As a matter of fact, one of our 9-year old granddaughters gave a talk in church a few weeks back on "Making the Sabbath a Delight." She stated that her favorite thing about Sunday was "playing games with Grandma and Grandpa after meetings."

I love games, but don't get to play them often. I'm probably too competitive for my own good. I really enjoy playing RISK, however, when my buddies and I play it eventually turns into a game of Diplomacy and goes on for weeks.
I have very fond memories of Stratego, my cousin and I were really into that game, I prefer games that minimize luck, but there were a few gimmiky games that I really enjoyed playing: I think that the best was this weird game called "Bermuda Triangle", you had a fleet of boats that had little magnets on them and a great big storm that moved around the board, sometimes it would pick up your ship and it was gone. The winner was whoever had the last ship, or whoever could cross the ocean x amount of times. It was totally luck based but it was scary because sometimes the storm wouldn't take you.
As a family, mine enjoys playing cards. PIT was a lot of fun, but very loud. For a nice quiet card game I prefer PHASE10.
The game that I absolutely hate playing is Monopoly, that thing destroys families! With that one, the most ruthless and mean player generally always wins.
Games that I would love to play but never have. Axis & Allies, I've studied the rules and played digital games but the board game is expensive and nobody that I know has any interest in playing. I'd also love to get Diplomacy and play that, but again, finding players is tough and when we get together all we want to do is play D&D.

I love to play Risk, it is my favorite board game by a mile. After that would be Scrabble coming along in second place.

Favorites among "other" right now would include Small World and Deadwood, while Sheriff of Nottingham has probably been the biggest family-wide hit.

Risk seems to be a very popular with old-school DMs, has anyone else here ever come up with their own rule systems? Besides playing D&D my group enjoyed playing but our games would never end. EVER. Now we have cats, so the days of long drawn out board games and war games are over. We can't beat the cats.

Mainly Risk, what's a cat? You let those in your house?

I have played a few that I checked but I play none regularly. I am attracted to card games but have developed no skill.

I checked the ones that I have played, and I selected other as well.
I really enjoy card games, and I hope to return to a Rummy variant called Crowns soon.

In college our games were short because no one would make deals with anyone else, so we got a sheet of heavy paper and drew in the Pacific Ocean and its islands and laid out several path across the ocean, make connections to Japan, two to Australia, one to California, and two to South America. Deal making became a real part of the game after we did that and the game became quite a bit longer.

I am pretty good at Chinese Checkers, but have not played in a long time. I am good at Scrabble, really good at Balderdash (I am good at writing definitions that have the look and sound of the dictionary, and am really good at Bananagrams, because I am really good at 2 and 3 letter words.

I enjoy a couple of dozen card games, they are a blast. In college we played with a guy would was good at dealing himself a winning hand, but he was such a bad card player we let him do it and never said a word because it evened the game up. Growing up at home, my family played a game from back in the mountains of WV called Setback. I have never found it in a rulebook.
