I saw in one of your signatures a quote from diaglo about OD&D being the One True Game and then I was thinking about my Magic Sword variation and then last night I had a dream and I just wanted to post what I can remember here so that I can develop the idea.
A man known as The Larsen came from a family that produced great warriors and powerful wizards. He himself was a great warrior and a powerful wizard one of those unique individuals where both are present in the same person and at the time of his death he chose the option of merging with his sword which had already become legendary. Over several generations the sword that was now known at The Larsen, also being known as The One True Sword. The Larsen(the man) had some special magic items at the time of his death and they were thought lost. The sword itself came "home" a year to the day after his death. A number of family members tried to take it up that first time until finally one succeeded in being accepted by the sword. Once he took up the sword it lead him through a number of trials to a secret vault containing those special magic items, that could only be obtained by the wielder of The One True Sword. Over the generations this family member became known as The One True Heir when in the 7th generation the child that took up the sword became a Paladin. Family tradition became that The One True Heir would pick who was to lead the family and who would inherit the families wealth and manage the estates. While The One True Heir and The One True Sword went out to carry on the family traditions now as a Paladin serving the elemental forces of Law. The Larsen - The One True Sword chose sons, sometimes daughters or if their was none then a nephew or a niece or a grandchild. Each generation The One True Sword grew in power.

You should develop this, it sounds pretty cool.

I never saw this idea before and I think it is quite fine. Reminds me of a quote by Leopold Blaschka about how his son was better at their detailed craft of glass flowers and animals than he was. ""Many people think that we have some secret apparatus by which we can squeeze glass suddenly into these forms, but it is not so. We have tact. My son Rudolf has more than I have, because he is my son, and tact increases in every generation." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_and_Rudolf_Blaschka

Here is a blog post that I made two years ago where I fleshed this idea out: What I will discuss is how I handle Artifacts, Relics and near/future Artifacts and Minor Artifacts. As I said, I suggest that you create items that are specific to your own home brew game world and come up with your own colorful names. Assign the powers, abilities and features to each item in a way that fits the flavor and character of your world and your campaign. There is no one size fits all when it comes to Creating Artifacts, Relics and so on. If you go to this post ( 30 Day D&D Challenge - Describe a Magic Item You Created - Day Seven) that I made early in the month, I talk about creating Magic Swords. In this post I spoke of three types of Magic Swords. The third type being a sword that is or is on the verge of reaching Legendary Status (Artifact). Those that are not there yet are Minor Artifacts on the verge of becoming a full fledged Artifact. When I say on the verge of becoming that is a relative term, it might take hundreds of years to complete the transition from minor to major. Here is what I said about Magic Swords in this post ( OD&D and Magic Sword House Rules) five years ago in February of 2015. As I said, design these items in a way that makes sense in your campaign. An Artifact that I created was my version of Ioun Stones. I allowed the player characters action to be woven into the mythology of the items. Here is what happened: Had they went back to the room again, the cubes would have been gone. But the six cubes she did not take, gradually sought her out. Unlike Ioun Stones, these cannot be grabbed and taken because they take evasive action and will defend themselves. The other thing is that when the set is fully assembled they become sentient and can communicate telepathically with their "chosen." When the set is together each cube assumes its own color, up till then they remain white.

The Perilous Dreamer I love the post above and can't believe I forgot to reply. I am completely into this development of the history of these magic items. It feels likely to deepen engagement regardless of how much of the "history" is played out by the player. Although it may not be worth developing formally, I am interested in the idea of failure of magic swords or their unmaking, as well. I suppose it does not lead to their becoming Artifacts, so probably not good for this thread, but it seems like if that possibility was there, it would make the "success stories" even cooler. With your permission I might include such an idea in a thread on failure of magic.
