. . . the NPCs with the party are seeking treasure and to come back alive, that is their primary motivations, as to any secondary motivations perhaps, just maybe, you should worry about that on the way back. [OOC: And this disqualifies orcish treachery on the way to rather than coming back from precisely how? Their highest Intelligence is 9, so they're not exactly creatively-thinking geniuses. Perhaps - to their minds - killing everyone in an ambush on the way to this obviously deadly, undead-filled dungeon, looting the bodies of their erstwhile compatriots and then stopping at a different town leagues away to dispose of the loot sounds like the best way to survive and prosper.]

Consider the word given. Shiyazthar looks to see who gives the "Wagons - ho!" Shrugging, he takes a look at the map (Who has it?) and begins walking. He glances at K. to make sure she's not wandering aimlessly, shades his eyes, and grins. It's good to get away from the bustling metropolis.

The first three days you travel through the countryside around Duraham along the road, passing through small villages and past many farms. You are traveling upgrade the whole way and have increased elevation by about 200 feet so far. During the fourth day the farms peter out and and the countryside takes on a wilder appearance with each step. Late on the fourth day you stop near one of a string of fortified keeps that define the border between civilization and the wilds. As you set up camp the captain, a sergeant and six solders come to your camp on horseback to take a look and catch up on the news and gossip.
"Hello the camp," says the Captain as they approach. "I'm Captain Chellrich and this is Sergeant Jarich, I'm happy to see that you look ready for whatever you are about to undertake. I would be remiss though if I did not make it clear that once you pass this point there is no help or rescue available and you will be on your own." He looks around the group and smiles, "OK, now we are done with the official business! So what brings all of you out this way? Anything interesting going on in Duraham that it would be good for an old soldier to know about?

Shiyazthar waits to see who speaks up and what they share. As long as he's able. Almost 20 seconds. While Shiyazthar is waiting to see if anyone else will talk (only two do) he suddenly notices that Kavita has knelt and is drawing in the dirt. It is the scene of a battle and the Keeps soldiers are in a tight place versus a motley crew of bandits, the Captain is fighting a huge armored figure. Kavita takes several minutes to draw this while Tuck and Herv are talking with the Captain and the Sergeant.Tuck greets the Captain shares all the latest gossip with him ( but not about the ruins) and just says that they are looking for an adventure that hopefully have a good payday at the end of it. Tuck and the Captain swap tales and lies for several minutes when their attention is drawn by Kavita. While Shiyazthar and Tuck are speaking with the Captain, Herv speaks to the Sergeant about the conditions up the road and any signs of trouble they have seen recently. The Sergeant tells Herv of a large group of bandits and they have had some skirmishes with a few smaller parties but have not yet been able to catch up with the larger group and that Herv and friends should keep an eye out and be wary of an ambush. Just then Kavita becomes the center of attention and the three ogres intone, "The Seeress speaks!"Kavita points to her drawing and to the Captain says, "Beware of the bandits, they will trap you and kill you, if you let them choose the time and place. You must trick them to live!" Weeping and moaning she repeats, "You must trick them! You must!"

Shiyazthar hides his face behind his hand for a moment, then speaks.
"Men - and lady - we can go merrily on our way thinking only of riches for ourselves. Or we can lend our hearts and arms to a fighting man who may well be doomed without our aid.
"Kavita has forewarned him - and us. Shall we cut these bandits and perhaps save ourselves from their raids upon our return? I know that I fight better when not weighed down by heavy gold and serving utensils. What say ye?!"

The Captain says, "Seeress, for real? The three ogres reply as one, "Graytusk takes her serious! He told us to pay attention, said to ignore her at our own peril. He said that an elf like this one has to have a gift!"
The Captain replies, "Well if Graytusk thinks listening is a good idea, that is good enough for me. He saved my life years ago, but that is a long story." The Captain watches the group to see what they decide and whether or not they follow Shiyazthar's lead.

Sora's visibly perks up as the talk of bandits and prophecy unfolds. As the Orge Chorus sings the elf's praises, he glances over at Josiah, the two nod in unity and when the Captain finishes speaking, Sora offers, "I and my companion . . ."
He jerks a thumb at Josiah, who silently nods.
". . . have no trouble with pausing in our journey, to help defend against the vile scourge of banditry. But as our group has agreed to a common purpose, so must we wait upon a consensus."
Sora looks about at the others, trying to gauge whether or not the group is willing to turn aside to help the Captain and his troop.

Sora visibly relaxes - just a tad - as he takes up a new position at the rear of the party, along with Josiah. He and his partner tie the pack animals they are responsible for into two separate strings - one for each of them - and then settle in for the journey ahead. What pack animals? You have two riding mules, when did you gain pack animals? There are four pack mules, three for the party and one for the three ogres. All pack mules belong to Graytusk and his nephews are along specifically to tend to them and one would assume to look after Graytusk's interests. The latest marching order put Sora and Josiah - as the only mounted individuals - at the back of the party, leading the pack animals. I was just running with that. If orges want to lead their mules yet Sora and Josiah are still at the back of the company, then there's going to be some defensive gaps to bridge, around the mules scattered about among the party.

Shiyazthar asks the captain and the noncommissioned officer, "Can you tell us about these bandits? Where are they usually encountered, their methods, what they might be afraid of, these sorts of things. If we're to trick them, we will want to know what they fear and want.“ During the exchange, Shiyazthar is stringing his bow and nods to Kativa to do the same. "Normally, she'd need no coaching," he explains to any curious looks, "but she's always a little disoriented after one of these —" he shrugs.

The captain replies that they rob travelers and have robbed homesteads and that they somehow seem to know where our patrols are going to be. They avoid large patrols and try to ambush smaller ones. Your well equipped party would be a prime target as you go on up the road. He turns and says, "Sergeant take the men out to check our surroundings and keep and eye out." The Sergeant nods and barks out orders and the soldiers leave camp to check the area.

(It would not be surprising that most players would suspect a traitor lurking within the captain's patrol itself, reporting to the robbers. [Shades of Butch Cavendish and Collins!] Shiyazthar is more than a little suspicious himself, with an innate distrust of people who would sleep inside buildings and live in crowds. He motions for the party to gather in a huddle and speaks very softly:)
"Does it not strike you suspicious that the robbers 'seem to know where (the) patrols are going to be? Does anyone think it a bad idea to take the captain into our confidence and lay a trap for the double-face?"

Once all of his men have left the camp the Captain turns to Shiyazthar and sees the group talking, when Shiyazthar turns his attention back to the Captain, the Captain says, "I have been aware for some time that there is a traitor somewhere among my men, but I have not been able to catch them nor figure out how they are communicating with the bandits. If you are up for it, I have a plan. I would like to use your party as bait, sending you down the road while I return to the keep and then I will abruptly rouse the men and gallop to your expected position with no time for the bandits to be tipped off. I know exactly how long it will take you to travel to a spot that is a common ambush point. They never use it if we are out and about. I want them to think that we will not be out and about.

Shiyazthar responds, "If our companions are agreed, then we are at your service. I have learned to listen when Kativa speaks, though I have never seen you (here he looks deeply at Kativa in their huddle) this intense. Do you remember aught of what you saw or said?"

"Does it not strike you suspicious that the robbers 'seem to know where (the) patrols are going to be? Does anyone think it a bad idea to take the captain into our confidence and lay a trap for the double-face?" Pursing his lips, Sora cautiously comments, "I am thinking in similar terms. Save for this: it strikes me that the Captain himself makes the best traitor, since he would doubtless have the most freedom of anyone in the post, having no one above him to inquire into his movements."[OOC: Sora obviously does NOT say this where the Captain can overhear it!]

Shiyazthar whispers (not caring if the captain hears, but still very quietly) "That did occur to me, but Kativa's omen would indicate that the bandits are his enemies." Sora nods, but adds: "That may not clear him. Perhaps he has been feeding information to the bandits in order to make their strikes predictable. Once he is sure that the bandits trust his information, the last 'leak' sets them up for an ambush. And suddenly he's the hero of the hour."
