So ... last night at Austin Jimm's Planet Eris based game.
My proud Aquilonian Veteran Rouland Mitrasson acquitted himself with honor! He single-handedly slew two giant ants, while most of the party was taking a nap brought on by a sleep spell, taking only a single hit point of damage in the process.
When we set upon by a fierce nightmare, Rouland once again rushed into the fray. He almost managed to kill her. Almost ...
The dice loved me last night. I was consistently rolling hits with only one or two missteps along the way. But then? They didn't! One hit, and down young Rouland went, not just mortally wounded but rent in twain.
Thing is? I had a blast! It wasn't the winning, it was the playing! It was amazing to explore a deep, dark dungeon; imagining my stalwart fighter's fear at the frightening nightmare bearing down on him ... yet still courageously standing his ground to protect his companions.
Where will Rouland's successor, brave Segar, go in two weeks? Who knows? We braved the wilderness, explored a dungeon, and broke a town last night ... the possibilities are endless!
I love olde schoole D&D!

Jimm has a really nifty Planet Eris rulebook (PDF and print) done in the style of the TLBB. He runs a good game and very much uses the philosophy of if you can conceive it your character can try it. Death is always near, but so are great rewards!
This latest iteration is based upon a Conan-esque type of setting. The setting itself is deadly, since it also involved wandering about the untamed wilderness. Traditionally, the wilderness is OD&D is always a bad place to be! As a result, we all rolled a stable of 3 PCs, obviously mortality was expected to be high.
First off? We started in the "big city." Our party was mostly human but but we did have one lion-humanoid PC. We made our way onto the frontier, battling wandering monster giant ants, and entered a small human settlement. We were enlisted into doing a reconnoiter of a local dungeon by a local merchant (an MU named Jingo) and run into some issues. We were wizard-locked in and while trying to find an alternate exit we encountered a rather ill-tempered nightmare.
As it turns out? There was another way out! The party took it and we soon found ourselves speaking with Jingo the merchant/MU again. After the party departed, one PC remained behind for some private negotiations. This PC had provided some rather lively negotiation interplay throughout and this interlude was equally entertaining. Unfortunately, in spite of a high Charisma, our PC managed to set off Jingo, who responded with all the force he could muster.
The situation devolved rapidly into an Angry Villager scenario (Vol III, p. 24) and the PC involved all ended up in gaole, leaving my fighter Segar in the local inne looking out the window and wondering what all the fuss was over.
Other highlights of the evening included a cheeky monkey stealing a PC's stolen gold. Turns out that monkeys are (a) faster than you, and (b) surprisingly hard to kill. That was a particularly entertaining encounter.
At any rate? The town is "broken" with regard to current group of PCs. It's a natural result of sandbox play and a cascade of unfortunate PC decisions, but that's all part of the fun, isn't it? You get to learn from missteps without having to pay the same penalties as in real life! And another character, a better one perhaps, always a few rolls of 3d6 and < 5 minutes away.
If you're ever given the opportunity? Play in Austin Jimm's games. I've been at his table many times over the years I've lived in Austin and have never been disappointed. Likewise with the fine folks he games with, they play with gusto and love taking on a challenge.
