I have more wild west in my games than Robin Hood. The lawmen weren't good men, they were just the toughest and meanest sombitches in town. Politics and the Law are rarely the same things. Your folks are thrown into the dungeon because they didn't pay their taxes, that is the law. Royals who don't pay their taxes are publicly executed, that is politics.

In my campaigns there were a lot of role playing diplomacy, negotiations and the like; just because the rules are short compared to the combat rules, is: 1) combat requires more rules, 2) those kind of things are meant to be role-played between the players & referee. It was in later editions that kicked morale/reaction tables/rules from the game & turned Diplomacy, Bluff ect into "skills" to be rolled not Role played.
When I was younger I ignored the morale/reaction tables because I didn't understand them & we as a group "roll-played" not "Role-Played"; so we handwaved it. Like the other posters said, we were 14 year olds who cared more about killing monsters & taking loot. Now days I prefer campaigns with plenty of role-playing social encounters instead of rolling them, unless there is a need. If a roll is required, a roll under Charisma is what I'll ask for modified by the needs of the situation.

I love the role-play every bit as much as the action and both tend to lead to the other.
