Just thinking about what all should go into the design of a fantasy city. I am using that term loosely for this thread itself. I am curious about the makeup of everything from a small hamlet (is that the right term) of 10 people all the way up to a mega-city of say 200,000 people or maybe even larger.
City:
Academic
Bars
Courts
Docks
Guard Barracks
Guilds & Guild Halls
Government
Housing/Residential Upper Class/Nobility, Merchant Classes, the poor etc.
Libary
Inns
Jails
Market - Open Air, Area near City Gates and Area near the Docks
Shipyards
Shops
University
What else would a major city have and what would smaller cities, towns, villages, hamlets etc have?

All of my cities are a little weird (Surprised?, I didn't think so). some examples
Parisia = fantasy Paris with Poet Dukes for the rulers and dozens of fighter clans, each with a pillar dedicated to their deeds and a wizard in a turret that is located at the center of the city and allows him to cast across the whole Place
Jom-to Rikki This flying city is from my home brew Africa it has many magical features . The stand out is a huge globe of water floating above the city filled w interesting fish.
another has huge waterfalls throughout .The falls are harnessed into lethal water cannons. The noise from these causes deafness and peeps to run amok(turning any citizen into a rage monster)

I wonder if they have conventions? If they do, I'm sure Ray Stevens would sing about it.
