Gilroy beams at Miller and says, "Right-o sir. I'm off to my turret. I'll have the guns hot. By the way, you wouldn't want to be sharing which unfriendly governments we might be encountering would you?"

Peng [sic] offers, "G' mornin'. How's it goin'?"The thin woman turns her head back toward Ping, for a second she just looks at him, then one corner of her mouth turns up slightly and she says with what might be a hint of sarcasm in her voice, "Five by five, Silva." 'Five by five?' Oookaaayy. That's old-tech Terran radio slang for 'loud and clear,' but that doesn't make sense . . .This is followed by what might be a wink, or maybe just an eye twitch, before she turns back to the others in the room and begins to nibble at the food on her plate. Intrigued now, Peng pulls out his datapad and [googles] alternative meanings for the mysterious phrase . . . Ah ha! 'Everything's fine.' Huh. I wish this chick looked more like the one who made it mean that. SHE was HOTT!Faith Lehane With BIG GunJust as Peng is about to say something stupid, his mind catches up with his mouth [an admittedly rare occurrence] . . . Heh. Maybe she's hintin' she's more like this Faith character than you might think. Best tread careful. So instead of what he was going to say, Peng says: "So . . . what's your job, if you don't mind me asking?"

After finishing breakfast, Gilroy says, "Cyril, that's one of the finest meals I've had the pleasure of eating in a long time. I'm looking forward to more of your cooking!" He then turns to Raven and asks, "Cap'n, would you prefer me to be in my cabin, turret, or the forward lounge during takeoff?" "You and Peng need to be in the turrets." says Blackjack, then he turns to Raven and says, "Sorry, I don't want to step on the Captain's toes, but I'd rather us lift expecting trouble and nothing happen, than lift fat and happy and be blind sided by somebody taking exception to us heading up the main." Raven smiles and gives an approving nod."Captain Firestorm is in command while we're in space, but I'll just tell everyone what my overall orders to her are right now." Blackjack says looking around the group, "Madame Cho has told me that two other trading houses are very upset about her mission up to Mantan. Either may attack our ship to prevent us from completing it and that could happen here or later. We have also learned that there is more piracy further up the main from here as well as potentially unfriendly governments. So, I want us to proceed like we're in dangerous territory at all times. While we're in normal space sensors should be continually manned and gunners either in their turrets or on immediate call to man their stations." Blackjack looks directly at Raven, "Raven, we're going 'in harm's way' so treat this like we're a military ship moving through enemy territory. Is that clear?" " Absolutely clear and the way I prefer to travel in unfamiliar territory, as usual we are on the same page Blackjack!" as Raven muses to herself that once again her respect for the man is well-justified. Raven, glances around the group and says, " Alright, you heard the man and that all goes double for me, off to your stations and we will get underway soon." Gilroy beams at Miller and says, "Right-o sir. I'm off to my turret. I'll have the guns hot. By the way, you wouldn't want to be sharing which unfriendly governments we might be encountering would you?" " An excellent question, and perhaps Blackjack can brief us as we prepare to get underway. But first our guests will want to get those physical taken care of. And Peng a word with you, if you will."

As Blackjack gives his little speech, the salient particulars penetrate Peng's awareness [even while he puzzles over the mystery of Cathy's 'five by five' and wink/twitch] and at it's conclusion he gives the ship's Owner Aboard the same semi-salute he earlier gave Raven. Then with a touch of snark in his voice, Peng asks: "Soooo, is that OH-ficial sanction for me to hang out in my 'ready room' most of the time?"

Peng nods, then disposes of his tray and heads for the compartment door. [OOG: I figure Blackjack would have said something equally snarky in reply to Peng's up-thread snarkiness, but nothing that actually needed a formal reply. Also, I figure Cathy probably kept right on ignoring Peng.]Raven [sic] says, "And Peng a word with you, if you will." He had almost made it out . . . Ah! Holy Sun, Unholy Void! What now?. . . but Peng turns and slouches his way up to Raven, comes to his [very loose] version of attention, gives his semi-salute and asks with patently false cheer: "Yes, Captain My Captain! You called?"

After breakfast, Doc Vargas will perform complete medical check-ups on the newcomers, opening new data files for them, integrating the records they bring but building a complete baseline for them from scratch. He will keep them noninvasive ( so, no gynecological work or body cavity searches, you devious GM), but will be taking and storing blood and urine samples, and baseline brain fMRI / rest EEG measurements (I assume the MRI tech is portable at this TL). The same he already has from every regular crew member (<grin>). He will also question them (and check for) any previous medical problems. He is looking for any conditions which might lead to complications in case of medical assistance, any pre-existing conditions, and anything which might be contagious, even if it is a common cold. He is, however, thorough enough that he will discover any serious stuff, like a slowly-building brain tumor or a recently broken bone, with a reasonable confidence. Oh, and a side test for susceptibility to space sickness---anybody testing positive gets a pack of pills for that. All that, of course, while politely chatting up the patients. Anything worth mentioning? ( Happy with the GM rolling for Doc). All the Delgado Trading personnel appear to be currently in the pink of health and what you see matches their records. There is something of note, though. OOC: Private Message on this coming...Got it. Doc Vargas starts detailed entries for everybody in his file system and informs the Captain that he is giving everybody a clean bill of health.

" Ha-Penny, I am hardly dead yet, though no doubt you've already composed an insulting eulogy."Peng's face gains a puzzled look at this . . . obviously not having [googled] the original meaning of the phrase before using it. Yep. Lazy. " "No Ha-Penny, I want to remind you in regard to our guests, that if you incite one of them to murder, you have no place to run and hide. In addition, I expect you to make the sacrifice of bathing regularly, cleaning your clothing and not turning the turret into your usual pig sty." Raven then turns and takes the report from Doc Vargas, nothing that it is thorough as usual and then proceeds to the bridge. Peng blinks slowly as his captain's rough words pummel him, but her verbal assault doesn't stop him from taking his usual pleasure in watching her stride away. As he heads for his official stateroom to take an actual shower, those listening very closely might hear him singing in a very quiet and surprisingly smooth baritone, "They love to watch her strut . . ."

A couple of hours after the impromptu meeting in the aft lounge, the ship is preparing to launch.
Blackjack is in Engineering. He has reported that the engines are hot, fuel tanks full and all systems are go!
Raven is in the Pilot's chair on the Bridge and Thazar is finishing a double check of the Navigation that he and Raven worked out while seated in the Copilot's chair. Both have skill with navigation and between them they should have no trouble plotting Jump 1's. This one looks good to Thazar.
The radio on the bridge crackles to life, "Patagonia Traffic Control to AC401 Clear Sails bound for Elati. You are cleared to lift for orbit and exit from Patagonia Local Space on 07-32-212. Please, observe the Flight Orders of the Day, and clear skies. Confirm, please on channel 7, PTC over."
Looking up from the screen where he had been looking at the plotted course, Thazar sees another screen showing the ship'd flight profile. Every light on the board is green and the sensors show no obstructions in are moving into the ship's launch path.
Raven scans the boards a final time and sees every light is green, power is at 100% and everything is ready to go.
Both Raven and Thazar note that they have the following programs loaded and running: Target, Gunner Interact, Launch and Anti-hijack. Their new Model 1/bis can run no more than that at a time. One of these will need to be swapped out for Jump-1 before the ship begins to transition to jump space. If there was no one with piloting or navigation skill on the bridge, both the Maneuver and Navigation programs will need to be loaded. Right now, though, Raven and Thazar can handle those tasks themselves.
Cyril is puttering around in the forward lounge in case he's needed by passengers or crew. Dr. Vargas is also in the forward lounge sitting in an easy chair awaiting lift off. Peng is in his turret and Gilroy is in his. Both see that they have full control over their weapons as Target, Gunner Interact and Launch are all up and running on the ship's computer. Neither think there is even a remote chance they'll be called upon to fire their weapons while in this system, but orders are orders.
Cho is in her stateroom as are Dean and Ting. Baltus and Cathy have come into the forward lounge and taken seats across from Dr. Vargus.
"I've never cared for lifts and landings." Cathy says with a sigh, then adds "If Cyril would join us we'd have a foursome for bridge."

A couple of hours after the impromptu meeting in the aft lounge, the ship is preparing to launch . . . Peng is in his turret and Gilroy is in his. Both see that they have full control over their weapons as Target, Gunner Interact and Launch are all up and running on the ship's computer. Neither think there is even a remote chance they'll be called upon to fire their weapons while in this system, but orders are orders . . . Peng eyes his rolled-up hammock wistfully . . . <sigh> Being paranoid on a commission like this is probably a good thing, but it's sure going to cut into my sack time.. . . then returns his gaze to his instrumentation, taking careful note of the vibrational readings for the old versus the new beam weapon capacitor banks . . . Hmmmm. The originals are holding fairly well. But those old whirligigs ain't used to spinning very long between discharges. We'll just have to see how it goes. The ones for the new gun are also in the green, but I ain't gonna trust 'em short of fifty [charge/discharge] cycles. Re-engineered rigs tend to be fickle, 'til all those "like new" parts get their collective groove together in use.
Keeping a careful eye on those capacitor readings, Peng settles back in his accel couch and toggles on his sound system (set to automatically cut out in favor of any incoming transmissions). The system engages his queued-up "Lift-Off Playlist," starting with . . . And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Till touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh no no no I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone . . .

Gilroy rechecks his gun readings, and comforted that they are all green, returns to pondering just what exactly might be on those flash drives that is "not exactly illegal" but is important enough to command the fee he's been offered. Never one to let a little personal risk put him off of a profitable bit of "side business," he entertains the notion of perhaps recruiting Peng for backup given Peng's apparent willingness to make a few creds on the side. With that thought he resolves to get to know Peng a bit better before approaching him for the "side business."

Not having anything to do in such situations, and having just completed several detailed medical examinations, Doc Vargas fixes himself a multi-colored fruit cocktail with heavy, organically-grown but local (so, not expensive) spices, swirls it carefully, and examines the consistency with a critical eye. To the external observed, the result looks like a not particularly-appealing glass of orange-green goop with black dots. Once he is satisfied, he takes a first careful sip, nods, and proceeds to enjoy a small break.

Sipping from his drink, Doc Vargas smiles and says, "Now that's an idea. Although I am not really much of a player, you'll have to go easy on me."

Raven switches to channel 7 and replies to PTC, " Thank you, everything is green and we will commence liftoff, clear skies! Switching to the ship communications, " Alright everyone time for lift off, we are cleared and away! Gunners look lively, shouldn't be any trouble, but be alert anyway!" At Raven's touch, the ship begins to lift from the tarmac. Thazar flicks the Sails' transponder to the on position. There is a low rumble as the grav modules push against the surface followed by a steady vibration as the ship gains height and speed. The light blue sky quickly turns dark blue, then black, as the ship leaves the atmosphere and enters space. There is a good bit of traffic in Patagonian orbit. Thazar keeps an eye on it on the sensors as Raven moves The Clear Sails into its designated exit orbit. A 30 minute partial orbit brings the ship to it's exit vector and Raven turns the ship gooses the power up to its full 1 g acceleration. It will be 2.6 hours to the 100 diameter jump point. Thazar expands the passive sensors out and sweeps the ship's exit path. There are three ships outgoing from Patagonia, but they are spaced out and none are on a vector to come anywhere near the path of the Sails. Two ships are incoming. The first is on a completely different vector from the one Sails is using and could get on closer than 5 million km even if it boosted at 6 g. The second, though, will pass about 100,000 km from the Sails in 40 minutes. Checking this ship's transponder broadcast, he sees it is announcing itself as the Browly Green a 200 ton Free Trader in from Fillo Thome via Fionn with a load of grav modules for sale and cargo destined for a pair of import companies on Patagonia. The comm light begins to blink. The screen shows it is an incoming message from Browly Green. In the turrets Peng and Gilroy make note of the only ship that looks like it could be a danger to their ship. The passive sensors won't give enough information to make sure it is what it says it is. They'd need the bridge to give them permission to use the active sensors to do that. The down side, of course, is that using the active sensors would give that other ship a really good target to lock onto.

Toggling his comm to "General Address" [OOG: All characters can hear him], Peng says in his usual bored voice: "Not meanin' to tell you your business, Cap. But in case our passengers don't realize the options, if we shut down drives and coast, this fella won't likely get any kind of passive lock 'til point blank range. While cutting boost increases the time we're in range of each other, we'll still pass through that right quick. The only way we'd be in range very long is if he flips and starts to decel. But if he intends to do enough of that to board us, he'll have to start it in just a few minutes, even if he can pull 6G."

"Aye, aye, Captain, just give the word if we need to "convince" the other ship that we're not an easy mark," Gilroy responds. "Everyone be aware that we have a possibility of a hostile and whatever you are doing you might want to strap in just as a precaution. I'll sound the alarm if it turns serious, Captain Firestorm out." OOC: No, taking the incoming message won't help with getting a lock on your ship. Your Transponder is already on, that's normal procedure, and it's a radio signal so over time that gives a pretty good location on the ship. Not enough to lock it for firing lasers, but good enough if missiles were to be fired. Turning off your Transponder would get you unwanted attention from any Patrol Boats in the vicinity and you don't want to do that if you can avoid it. It's likely that Browly Green just want to chat."Browly Green here, out of Fillo Thome via Fionn." the message continues, "Come in Clear Sails! Where are you bound?"The Clear Sails begins to coast. The time to your jump point begins increasing. A minute later you receive incoming hails from Patagonia Traffic Control and from a Patrol Boat called SDB18. They have both noticed that your ship has stopped accelerating and are wondering if you're suffering an engine failure and if you need help. The Patrol Boat lights up its Transponder and paints Clear Sails with its active sensors. It has been absent from your screens until now, but with its active sensors up and its Transponder on, you get a good position for it. It's starboard and forward of your ship about 200,000 kms away.

The [ SDB18] lights up its Transponder and paints Clear Sails with its active sensors. It has been absent from your screens until now, but with its active sensors up and its Transponder on, you get a good position for it. It's starboard and forward of your ship about 200,000 kms away. Peng quickly but carefully enters the SDB sensor data - including likely vector changes based upon predicted performance envelope - into his gun plot. Sitting back and forcing himself to relax, Peng mutters quietly to himself: "In for a penny, in for a pound. A certain Patagonian SDB commander might make a 'regrettable error in judgement,' were the payoff high enough . . . or the threat to his/her near-and-dear severe enough."

As noted upthread:OOC: If it will not aid the Browly Green in locking on the ship we will take the incoming message, if it will aid them we will ignore it.Raven's keys the intercom again. Ignoring Browly Green for the moment, Raven sends a message to the PTC, " Should we be concerned about being targeted by Patrol Boat SDB18? Is there a problem that we don't know about?' Then on limited intercom to the two gunners, " Be ready, at my command, to fire with all guns blazing." OOC: Raven thinks to herself, something about this really stinks and it makes me think that there is a lot of info missing from our briefing. Seems that the bribes may have already been passed out to take us out.

"Charging capacitors," Peng acknowledges to Raven, simultaneously flipping up the wire cage over the red "CHARGE ALL" paddle and slapping it hard. The deck beneath his feet immediately begins to tremble lightly, as a high-pitched whine starts behind him, then quickly escalates past the high end of human hearing.
And now we're in it. SBD will definitely see our power spikes and know we're ready to rumble. Green Goblin probably will also; he might not have passives as sensitive, but he's closer.
