The first RPG, Blackmoor, was firmly embedded with science fantasy and an apocalyptic vibe. Greyhawk has a touch of science fantasy and Arduin, originally an OD&D homebrew was full-tilt Gonzo and Apocalyptic science fantasy. Of course the great inspiration for Gamma World is the unfinished trilogy by Sterling E Lanier - the first two volumes are Hiero's Journey and The Unforsaken Hiero. Another classic is A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller, Jr.. There was a followup novel published posthumously 37 years after the original volume is Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman, which I have not read.
The tropes of science fantasy and an apocalyptic vibe are book present to some extent in OD&D its self if you dig into it.
Have any of you ever run a Gamma World Style OD&D Campaign?

I'm about to run one, with, I think a nice science/fantasy vibe. I have had around 10 players roll up six characters each. Everything will take place on the OS map, but beginning in the desert. The first dungeon they will delve in was created by the SR #1 generator. The best part is, this group of players is used to dark ages or high fantasy style roleplaying so I'm hoping they are pleasantly surprised by:
Snake People with energy weapons, mutated by a strange orb spit up from a volcano. Demon summoning wizards with empty eye-sockets and death magic. Ooze people with luminous eyes. Psionic red skinned desert elves who have tamed flying rocs and prehistoric beasts. Lost starfarers.
and so on.
Apologies to anyone whose ideas I may have pilfered from who knows where!

& only now do I remember that the uncanny x-allen asked also. Not really that much to tell. The original rpg's setting was a primitive society polluted by not-ready-for-it tech, and I just followed that premise. And whenever players would discuss, speculate, and dread what might happen next, I would happily steal their fears. Eventually we had such cliches as childhood joys turned to threats or mysteries (an airbourne sailboat following them from above, the world's ugliest troll watching them through a spyglass, was Popeye), an actual railroad train to heard them back onto a wilderness which had squares or hexes patterned on the ground. If it was good enough for Mr Sta-puf and "Lions and tigers and bears oh my" it was good enough to scare my players. It seemed to work. The hidden tech, perceived as magic, made almost everything easy. It took 10 years and a fun trip to Korea for a player to discover (but not perceive) that the planet had been fitted to be navigated away from When Worlds Collide incidents.

I'll be working on creating a OD&D based Gamma World inspired setting, taking the limited info on the default setting and building off of that foundation. I'll also likely draw from Fallout, RIFTS, After the Bomb 2e and plenty of Post-Apocalyptic art I see online as inspirations. I'll likely post about it on my 'Musings about Original Edition Adventures' blog as some of the art I'll post showing my inspiration might not fit the community standards of the forum; that said I'll post cleaned up artless posts for the forums.

The first RPG, Blackmoor... Humm...? I always assumed that was Tékumel: Empire of the Petal Throne?
Not just that was the first setting published by TSR, its backstory plays out like a sci-fi, as the planet was a colony by the Human Space Empire before it was closed-up in a pocket dimension.
Sci-fi and fantasy share a strange history. In the Pulp Era, both genre where interchangeable. Space explorers like Northwest "The Original Han Solo" Smith would have unearthly, supernatural encounters on alien worlds, while fantasy heroes like Conan "Granddaddy of All Knockoff Barbarian Heroes" O'Cimmeria would find themselves in strange places with alien technology beyond anyone's understanding. Lovecraft pit it both in a blender, add horror, and set it to "Liquefy".
Have any of you ever run a Gamma World Style OD&D Campaign? Given the strange nature of D&D, with all the strange creatures, magic items beyond anyone's understanding, the way spells work, and lots of ancient ruins, every D&D world feels like a Gamma World setting to me.
Although, if you want to watch a show where D&D and GW mixes beautifully together, watch Adventure Time with Finn & Jake. It is unmistakably D&D!

It was however, a wargame as early as IIRC the 1950's.
