Vol. I (Men & Magic) p.8 describes Other Character Types as anything (other than the core classes and races) the player may desire to play. Given as an example is a Dragon-character; starting out very "weak" of course, and working its way "up to the top"--whatever that means. But it's there, right there in the original rules, first volume, the official means to which players could join a party as a were-bear, dragon, hill giant--whatever--as long, I suppose, as there is no objection from anyone. Did anyone actually, ever, do this? I've heard stories of such, but never in great detail as to how it was all made to work. Is anyone still doing this? or, did it get quickly voted out by refs and groups? Would anyone starting an OD&D game/campaign, today, consider doing this? To me, its a fascinating component from the past that generates lots of thoughts. But then again, nowadays I tend to contemplate my naval far too often.

I played a Balrog in Greyhawk with Rob Kuntz as ref. Ask him how he made the mechanics work.

I played a gold dragon for one adventure (name of NEDLOG). The balrog, IIRC, was short lived as you were back to the Twin Cities. I had almost forgotten about that!

A few years back, the son of one of my players came to visit for several months and then every other month for a while. A 3E/3.5E player was he and he wanted to play a dragon. I started him out as a 1st level dragon and we played him up to 3rd level. It was a lot of fun and I would like to have someone play one for several years in the campaign, if anyone else wanted to. Down in the campaign section you can read a little bit about how I am running dragons IMC. I created them to have three life phases with the middle one bookended with a cocoon stage. It is this middle section where they can be used as a PC and still fit my vision of an ancient dragon being near immortal and extremely old. I posited that even a 1st level dragon PC would have just a bit of that dragon aura about them even in human form, such that normal 0-level humans and demi-humans would be very uncomfortable around him, so he could not go into villages, towns or cities along with a few other drawbacks.
