Hi Rob--- Chris Spiller was asking over on DF about the origins of Mordenkainen, and it got me thinking about something you wrote in the ERK Archive: So Gary began playing in ERK in early 1973, and by mid-1973 his PCs were facing off against the Terrible Iron Golem---within no more than six months from the start of the campaign. Since Gary had been refereeing Greyhawk and other campaigns so much in the years prior to and up through the playtest of OD&D, did you allow him to begin play at a higher level than level 1? Were you specifically trying to test out the limits of higher-level play also, perhaps? Allan.

No. As I stated in the First Living Campaign essay on my current blog Gary started Yrag first then I let him add Mordenkainen as a co-patriot because he was adventuring solo at level 1. The record is clear from past quotes, as well, that we were playing almost every day, sometimes 3 times a day in a day, whether in Greyhawk or El Raja Key. It wasn't once a week or once a month (like you are now challenged to do, Gro), we were hoofing it big time and so levels went up faster. Also factor in that we HAD to test the ranges of level play (L, M, H), so we had to progress to higher levels in order to write and test those parts of the rules, yes? Coincidental though it was, as we earned our levels, but it did prompt us to think of new ways to gain those levels, like Gary's Dragon in the Wagon ploy in my game, etc.

Wow, playing everyday that would be a blast. So at what level did you each start running your character solo?
