Let me try my hand at this spinoff topic thingy ( ) from the Robert J Kuntz Interview and see how it goes. Hey robkuntz, unless it would impinge too much on one of your forthcoming books, could you expand on what you mean by Will you also expand a bit on Call of Cthulhu? Did you ever hear anything about the unpublished Dark Worlds that proceeded Call of Cthulhu? Does anyone else know on what David Ewalt based his "(Players) didn’t care for the rules.', comment? From what I can find even though it went out of print with few copies printed it remained quite popular among the few that had the rules and eventually other editions were put out. On the website it says Which is both unusual and a great thing. Is anyone else familiar with either of these games?

Hey Mighty Darci! You have some 'Mighty' questions that I will spend my time over the next few days crafting responses to.
Thanks for this and for at least one prominent reason: It caused me to think of something else that is related to my grouped essays on the craft of game design and now I have another angle due to this passing interchange to proceed from with a specific essay I was outlining. Serendipity again!
I'll be back!

Hey robkuntz , unless it would impinge too much on one of your forthcoming books, could you expand on what you mean by Will you also expand a bit on Call of Cthulhu? Did you ever hear anything about the unpublished Dark Worlds that proceeded Call of Cthulhu? OK. I'm going to take a stab at this without descending into too much design jargon. "Wide lateral Shift". The D&D concept was what i see as a "corporate ladder climbing" model. It's an inverted pyramid and then like in business you retire, though I crushed the latter precept with my GGm (God Game model 1974/1975) and that is detailed in an upcoming book of mine, New Models in RPGs. Essentially GDW bypassed the TSR inverted pyramid model by shifting to different objective paths. In D&D it's experience via adventure to climb (or ascend). In EG the integration points were widespread, social status, duels, frontier service, so we have a widening, or a lateral shift, as to where one could place their selected emphasis. Due to this the entire conceptual scope widened, so more and more emphasis could be placed upon the specifics related to the period. You could do that through rules in D&D, but the system for it was not explicit and had to be added as a subset whereas in EG this system thinking was already set. With CoC I see the emphasis as a mere tipping to skills that one builds through during the climb, so it is a mere shifting from vertical to horizontal, so the axis is still linear: the system walks from the right to left rather than from down to up (i.e., it is A to B in either case). The skills still engage the environment just as stats, hp and magic do in D&D so the design element route does not change for its applied sub-systems at all, only their names change as do their implementation paths. I'll end here in case you have further Qs. pS--Nope, I have never heard about 'Dark Worlds'.

Some good stuff there robkuntz and I will add that just mentioned book " New Models in RPGs" to my wish list. I find the whole quite interesting and want to know more (I know, wait for the book! ). I always wondered where Menzter got his ideas for the Immortals part of BECMI and now perhaps we know what may have inspired that branch. I look forward to reading and seeing if there are any similarities, and whether he was imitating or creating. At least En Garde! is available and as noted above with minimal differences between the different editions.

Also interesting are the many personal additions being made to it according to proclivity and ranges of interests in exploring the period in depth and in imagining the many instances of interactions during that time which are then sluiced into the growing lateral shifting of objectives. That is why I stated that the game has more instances for evolvement. The system has been ported to a more modern (Sci-Fi) type of environ as well and IIRC.

Taking into account the posts with some information on "Domain" play with D&D and the D&D character progression and the En Garde! " social status, duels, frontier service" and whatever else is there or may be discovered with additional research it seems to me that they could be integrated gradually from the beginning and reaching the beginnings of the full flowering of the character and the options around name level as the character grows in the various types of progression. From the Traveller game we have started I see elements that could be integrated as well and perhaps a touch of Gamma World from the reading I am doing. I was reading elsewhere on the forum about Arduin and some elements of it would seem to fit nicely together with the rest of this "rich meaty soup" as my dad would say.

It would allow specific progressions of interest to be forwarded for the PC without the need to concentrate first and foremost upon vertical scaling of the "power-up" hp/combat level mechanic. In essence it incorporates vertical and horizontal throttles for the PC from the beginning unlike D&D where these really are starting to be examined in the latter case near its supposed "end game." IOW, there's more choice for world engagement, and on different levels, from the onset.

That would be something to play with. I suppose that I am going to have to learn how to write that myself and then teach someone to run the game so I can play. Best to do it without using the OGL and make it a complete new game I would think.

No, Please do tell... Do you have a Norwegian friend who's a mentalist? I do. He serves things like that. Straight from the horse's mouth; but the question was, "But you gave up on brain food, no??" Are you suggesting that it is not only your friend who "heads up" this menu, but that you may be waggin' its tail as well? Neigh-ver mind...

List of resources, copy of OD&D pdfs, check copy of En Garde!, need copy of Gamma World, need copy of Arduin, need copy of Traveller, check copy of Pendragon, need access to Encyclopedia Britannica, check & other resources of global nature Links to historical economic data Time to go through these items and decide what ideas and concepts I want to keep and brainstorm for ways to take it to new places. Well that will keep me busy for quite a while.

Well that will keep me busy for quite a while. Hah. If you find it too time-consuming you could always clone yourself like I've done... Good luck with narrowing down the potentials. There's a rewritten summary of the En Garde rules online somewhere. I'll check as it's an old link. There are also pdf downloads for tables and character sheets at their current website.
