Noticing the threads about Traveller, Metamorphosis Alpha, Gamma World and others made me wonder about what your experience is when it comes to the RPG's produced by Chaosium (Runequest, Call of Cthulhu, Stormbringer, Worlds of wonder, Pendragon etc)? Which ones have you tried, and what did you think of them?

I ran an 8 year campaign using Stormbringer and Runequest, called it Stormquest as the players crossed between both realms. Have run oodles and oodles of Call of Cthulhu and again the system works well...I think 7th for CoC was interesting I have yet to run a game using it...I did run a one shot for a game day at my FLGS over the summer. Pendragon and Worlds of Wonder were experiments when I was younger and they didn't leave any lasting impression on me...other than, meh...ok. I have also used the BRP rules for a couple of one shots with friends, again nothing outstanding but it handled what I needed. The one system that I think is really universal and handles things very well is Savage Worlds, other than Supers that is. I have run and been run in several games/campaigns of that and have nothing at all bad to say about the system...well maybe the magic is like a lite beer, some taste just not filling.

Thanks for sharing! That Stormquest campaign sounds really cool - and eight years is pretty impressive! The BRP system is decidedly the one I'm most familiar with, although I haven't played much of the American originals, mostly domestic BRP games for me. The system has its flaws, but I like it and it's so easily houseruled too. I haven't tried Savage Worlds, and don't know much about it or how it works to be honest. Just seen a few books and read the odd review.

Call of Cthulhu and Basic Role Play here. What sort of adventures have you run in Call of Cthulhu? Pulpy horror-action where the PC's actually might survive and save the day, or traditional "this can only end in death or madness" kind of adventures?

Savage Worlds plays fast...very fast. We have had games that I thought were going to last, because of combat, be over quickly...I've had a few go the other way as well but not many.
I think my favorite time frame is that 1920's 30's with the system...though I have played some modern era games as well that have been fun.
I actually linked two campaigns together even though we had played the first one a few years earlier and only two of the players in the latter game caught it...it was a lot of fun!

I ran an Arkham Campaign that ended in utter madness combining Lovecraft with Clive Barker Material and I started and Innsmouth game last year that has creeped out my players steadily, despite everyone knowing what Innsmouth is all about. I do love Coc ... the OSR has me curious as to whether The Cthulhu Hack is in any way comparable/superior than the Chaosium rules ...

Pendragon is the greatest RPG of all time. In it you experience death, glory, love, betrayal, lust, madness, quests, magic, the darkness of the human soul, battle, duels - I could go on...
Stormbringer is great fun.

Just to make everyone aware, if someone wants to do a pbp game for any of these or other games, just let me know.

I'd love to play in a game like that! It's been far too long since I played any horror RPG's at all, and I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft. Clive Barker isn't too bad either, to say the least...

Stormbringer is great fun. That sounds really interesting. It seems to me like there might not be too many people playing Pendragon (I could be wrong about that though) but those who actually play it absolutely adore it. I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about it, really.

I have run a LOT of RuneQuest (RQ 1.5 as I used to call it, I was an early adopter of RQ 1 and didn't see the point in paying to buy another copy of the rules back in the day).
I have also run a little bit of Elf Quest and we rolled up characters for Ring World.
I owned Call of Cthulhu at one point, but it never really appealed to me.

Pretty bog standard BRP with chargen aimed at producing Elf Quest elves (with stats for the other inhabitants of the world also). Magic is skill based, has hit locations and strike ranks. Actually looks like it really pulls from RQ rather than BRP. From the quick reference sheets, combat looks like RQ with the same multiple attacks per round for some missile weapons based on DEX SR. I'm not sure RQ/BRP is a good system for playing out Elf Quest though... Frank

Ran a 3 year Traveller/Runequest campaign, ending (with a major revolution in Pavis) only when I was shipped overseas. For me, the Big 3 were TnT, Traveller, and RQ - RQ 1.5 as ffilz calls it. Which is an odd choice for for a gonzo type GM, but even complex rules can be ignored.

I don't know if Pendragon V edition is still in print or in PDF.
PENDRAGON is Greg Stafford's love letter to Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. If that sounds like fun to you, you'll love it.

For 25 years I ran nothing but RuneQuest, at first RQ2 and then adding bits of RQ3 until I was running mostly RQ3. Started in Glorantha, then quickly moved to Greyhawk, Traveller Imperium, Middle Earth, Time Tunnel, Near Future Solar System, Blade Runner, A Plague Of Demons, WWII, Biggles, Mythago Wood, Aliens, Star Wars, Domitian's Rome, Hyperboria, and probably a bunch of other settings I've forgotten. An extremely adaptable system. I also played CoC, but never liked the Mythos so usually just ended up using RQ instead (my Biggles game started out as CoC because of Green and Pleasant Land, but quickly moved to RQ. I loved Jon Ossoway's Cthulhu Rising although, again, I left out the Mythos. I played Stormbringer first edition, and found it fun but ridiculously unbalanced. The Chaosium's Magic World (the new one) was based on it but it's not being developed now. Except someone called me is working on something called AEON:mageworld™ ... I loved Worlds of Wonder when it came out, and still wish to this day that it could have exploded into a universal system the way GURPS did. It's such a pity that it died on the vine, except for Superworld. Having just completed a little volunteer work for the Chaosium, i.e. transferring the entire boxed set into an editable document so they can turn it into a book for publication, my high opinion of it is reinforced. There is an awful lot packed into those slim booklets.

I REALLY want to hear about the new WoWonder, Mr Vile. Me, too - haven't heard anything since handing over the document, but A) I know the Chaosium is busy sorting out RQ7 - and the RQ2 re-releases - and B) WoW is not a priority for them, so I wouldn't get too impatient just yet.

Can I impatiently ask when I may become impatient? Well, judging by the delays in delivering the Classic RQ Kickstarter ... 2019?

It sounds very intriguing, and I really wish I'd picked up a copy back in the day instead of, say, the Mechanoids RPG. I've run a fair amount of Call of Cthulhu in the past but we played it fairly loose, I'm not at all a fan of the rules system.

I've played Call of Cthulhu. To be honest, I'm not much of a fan. The stats and skills seem to belong to different systems. The questionable statting up and canonising of everything slightly Mythos by every author who's ever namechecked Lovecraft would, I think, be better off scrapped and replaced with technical advice on how to evoke cosmic horror in play. Finally, most of the published material expresses an awkward tension between the (sorry) implied narrative arc of the role playing game (we sneer, but you don't put experience points and sanity erosion mechanics in without expecting a protracted game, and you don't include combat rules without expecting people to fight) and the rather more passive and ill-fated lot of the Lovecraftian protagonist, who is not a 'hero' in any sense of the word I recognise.
Call of Cthulhu often feels like a Lovecraftian palette swap of some fairly generic RPG - all the monsters and suchlike are there but it doesn't feel like being in or recreating a Lovecraft story. Fun can be had with it but to achieve the proper Lovecraftian 'feel' the players must engage to lose, and I feel that's at odds with the 'game' part of 'role playing game'. My best moments in the form have been with diceless or dice light 'community theatre wannabe' non-gameplay, not with CoC.
