Yes. I guess modules can turn out well, of course, but I agree with ripx187 that, as good as a module may look like, it's something done by others and that's subject to their tastes, even if it was thought to a general public. Your individual tastes may not coincide with those of the general public. That's what happens to us (and I'd dare say it's probably so with most people on these boards). I also enjoy reading campaign settings. It's a kind of escapism for me but I rarely steal ideas from them. I'm sometimes find myself in a dilemma, when I want to use a published campaign setting for a game I'm gonna prep, but then I feel too restrained and end up going back to my own world. I havent read or run a modual for 25? years They are for Dungeon Medocres not DMs I ran the dungeon in Mentzer's basic set, but there it's only the first level of the dungeon and it's key that's laid out and then just the dungeon map for the 2nd level. After that it's a do-it-yourself thing, which is good. Then B1, but we never got to finish it. Apart from that, haven't run a module ever. I've to say I started playing D&D (any edition of it from 2e backwards) just six years ago. I'd use modules maybe to steal ideas, but I think I haven't even done that. Got more inspiration from Sword & Sorcery books or any other sort of literature, movies, etc.

Modules can be used and some are fairly open-ended. We should not insult people because using a module gives them a chance to play. While many of us do not use modules, I would play in a game where the DM is using one. Modules such as B-2 Keep on the Borderlands by Gygax are completely open-ended and non-linear.

Ideas can come from anywhere as you state.

I'm not criticing modules per se or people who use them. I'm saying why in general I'm not atracted to using them. I have some modules actually and enjoy reading them, some of those I think I might run, but of course heaviliy modified to fit into my campaign (which I think is the way they were thought, at least for the earliest ones). But in general I prefer creating my own stuff and think that having to learn a module takes more time than doing the things myself. That's maybe because I'm a seat of the pants DM, my players haven't noticed when I improvise up to the point that they asked me once when we were hanging out if we could go back to my place and play a game based on a big city and they thought I had everything already thought out. Not in the least. Some years after that we're still playing the same campaign! Actually, I agree with what you said there!
