OOC: There will be another thread with deckplans and stats. This thread is your first look at your new ship and discussion...
The party following Samantha leaves the building and proceeds across the tarmac to a series of huge hangers arranged in a row to your left. The fourth hanger has a placard in front of it with the words "The Nine Bells" printed in large letters.
Sam leads all of you through the open hanger doors into the cavernous interior. The inside of this hanger is large enough to hold a thousand dton ship, so there is plenty of room for the much smaller...about 400 dton...ship inside. There is a bustle of activity around around the aft of the ship as a gaggle of maintenance workers in Navy issue coveralls work on the ship. The aft hull plates have been removed giving access to the ship's interior, and her drives from outside the ship. To those of you with Engineering experience, it looks like the fusion engine and both maneuver and jump drives are being given a complete overhaul.
"Well, there she is!" Sam raises her hand and points at the ship, "Feel free to do a walk around. I'll wait for you here by the gangway."
As you walk around you note a few things.
First, as you look at the markings along the floor of the hanger you can see that the ship is right at 50 meters from aft to bow and just under 40 meters from port to starboard at its widest at the stern. The bow is only 3 meters wide then the ship's width angles back in a lifting body configuration. There are four gangways, all currently extended to the floor of the hanger. Two are a little forward of amidships on port and starboard sides. These gangways disappear into the ship's hull and probably lead to the ship's working spaces. The other two are port and starboard near the wheel bays toward the stern, these are likely to lead into the Engineering spaces as that is where the hull plates are removed and the work is going on.
Second, the dorsal and ventral turrets are currently removed, as are the port and starboard turrets. This leaves ruddy big holes in the ship's hull, and looks terrible! However, you can see where a metal framework has been built around all four of these holes. To do this the turrets would have had to be removed first.
Third, there is a 15 meter wide cargo hatch at the stern of the ship. It is clam shell like, with the bottom half opening down to form a ramp into the cargo hold and the upper half swinging up and sliding back into the hull.
Fourth, while looking up you can see the edge of what must be a ship's boat cradle mounted on the dorsal, top, side of the ship. It is aft of amidships, must be over the cargo hold. Some of you have seen this configuration before. There should be a ladder from the cargo hold right up to the boat cradle with an short tunnel between the ship and the boat's airlock.

Charlie's first thought as he walks around is how big she is compared to what he was used to. Honestly, his thoughts go more toward what they can do to make the space lanes safer with her than anything else. That makes him smile as he watches how the others react to their new ship.

"Well, there she is!" Sam raises her hand and points at the ship, "Feel free to do a walk around. I'll wait for you here by the gangway." Takheal and Tokheletoi walk into the hangar, with her leading and him a bit behind her at her right shoulder. They converse quietly in their own language as they walk together around the ship.

Hinkle walks along with the others glancing at the ship as he does, "Huh! So this is the ride? It's got some turrets, but it needs weapons for ground support and four, no probably five places you could blow a hatch and board. Mostly, ride is just a ride, but looks like this one is going to be base, support, bunker, and our ticket out of Snitsville, so I guess it's good to look her over, huh?"
Spying Charlie, who doesn't appear to have any of the Army Brass Buttons around him for the minute gives Jo an opportunity. Hinkle walks over and does a passable salute before leaning in and saying quietly, "Captain, Sir! I'm Corporal Joself Hinkle, late of Her Majesty's 14th. I'll get straight to the point, if you don't mind, Sir!"
"I'd like to ask about your policy on shipboard distilleries? Some Captain's allow them, some don't and some don't but turn a blind eye when one inevitably pops up. Mind my asking where you fall on that spectrum, as it might save some headaches later on, Sir!" Hinkle stops and stands at attention...passably.

A question, though. Why a still? Bottled isn’t your style?” "Um, yes sir." Josef says, "I'm not much of a drinker, but in my experience most troopers and ship's crew do want, some need, a taste from time to time. Some need alcohol to deal with Jump, confinement aboard ship, fear, and just as grease for the social interactions in a close and closed environment. So, unless you've got a ship full of 'tea totalers' you're going to have some booze aboard. If you don't provide it, the troop will.""Now, why make it aboard, rather than stocking it as bottles and cans, sir? The answer to that is control. Control of space, quality, quantity and contents.""If takes more space to store crates of drink than it does to have your own still. The ingredients are going to be already aboard as raw materials for your FoodMan (Food Manufacture Unit) that your cook uses to make the bread, meat and veg he turns into meals. So, you just increase the storage for that a little bit and you save a lot of space." "Second, you want the quality of the drink to be good. That can be assured when you make it yourself. Out in the boondocks, you get what you get and don't know if it's any good until you drink it. Even if it seems good, you're going to be far away, with no recourse, if you get half way down the crates and discover you've been stuck with rotgut. Make it yourself and you can insure the end product tastes good and isn't dangerous.""Third, when you make it yourself you can control the contents of the product. You can adjust the proof to the level you want, altering it lower or higher, depending on the circumstance. You are using ingredients you know are as healthy as possible because you made them, too.""Fourth, when you make it yourself you can make the quantity you want. Only, the quantity you need for the troopers needs. Having too little leads to unrest. Having too much is a temptation to overindulge that some folks can't control.""Lastly, sir, there is a phycological need for troopers to feel they have some control over some part of their lives. Having a 'still' where 'they' control what and how much hooch they have access to gives them that feeling of control. Now, the brass buttons, if you'll pardon the expression sir, may know and even control quantity and contents of the product behind the scenes, but if it isn't made obvious the troopers will still get that phycological boost. They'll embrace the fiction that they control their drinking if it isn't made too obvious, sir. They always do.""That's why, Sir!" Jo finishes almost snapping another salute before catching himself adding with a smile, "Habits of a lifetime are hard to break."

"I'm not the best brewer, but I'm not bad, and I don't doubt that there are others who'll be aboard this ship that are as good or better than me." Jo says, "Give us good ingredients and good equipment and I'm confident that you won't be disappointed."
"Thing is, sir, my specialty is grease not beer." Jo says leaning in and lowering his voice a bit, "I find things the troop, and now the ship too, I guess, needs and can't get through regular channels. Then I find ways to acquire those things."Jo pauses for a second to observe Charlie's face, if he isn't seeing immediate rejection he'll continue, "For example, I heard the Vargr guy speak earlier about needing a laser rifle made for his kind. I'd bet you credits to cronunts we aren't going to get one of those from Army or Navy procurement. There ain't no Vargr in our Services, so no need to stock 'em, you see?."Jo judges Charlie's reaction again and then continues, "If that's the case, I'd like permission to see if I can acquire one of those things for him. Nothing really illegal, just looking around, doing a bit of trading, maybe greasing a palm or two...that sort of thing."

Ekhunoz can be found specing out the middle of the ship, looking at living quarters. "Yes Yo-sef." "Hey!" Josef nods to Ekhunoz aksing, "It's ek-Hun-oz, right?"Jo continues after giving Ekhunoz a chance to correct him and attempting to get the pronunciation right, "Ekhunoz, at the meeting you said something about a Laser Rifle built specially for your hands." "If the normal channels don't turn one up for you, and I seriously doubt either the Army or Navy have a Vargr Laser Rifle in their normal stock, would you mind if I do a little digging around and see if I can come up with one for you?"
"I'd need your help to make sure that what I come up with actually works for you before whatever deal I have to make is finalized. So you'd have to be involved. See?"
"Like I told the Captain, outside, I might have to do a bit of bargaining, trading maybe even grease a few palms to get this done. Nothing illegal, if I can help it, but I might have to walk right along the edge of that, if you know what I mean?"Jo stops and waits to see how Ekhunoz responds.

Casca steps aboard the ship along one of the aft gangplanks and soon finds Engineering. He runs his hands over the manifolds and connections, spending particular time getting a feel for the layout. Was it designed by an Engineer? Are there hooks for wrenches in the right place, and grounded trays for data clips near the jump drive? \The standard questions that will make operating the drives smooth and efficient. The dispersed structure, separating the jump drive from the powerplant annoys him, but he understands it's part of the design for these ships.
If there are multiple terminals, he leaves a sweater by one of them in J-drive section. One with a nice chair, or not within arms reach of the in-ship comm.
He's not looking for ease and comfort, but for clean efficiency. With the drives exposed, he expects that opening the hatches will lead him back to the large bay? In any case, once he's out, he explores the attachment for the Ship's Boat. Custom mounts are always tricky, and he hopes it's bog-standard. Are the clamshells on the cargo bay wide enough to admit the SB if the clamp is being used for another ship? If his plan for a supplemental income is going to work, that would make things much easier.
The particulars about the ship's boat are not concerning him at this time, nor is securing a stateroom, though he knows there's one removed from the others opposite the low berths often, that is often unwanted because of its proximity to the barracks. He assumes these things will be allocated, and does not want special treatment.

Jo says, "Can't guarantee anything, but it's a big planet so there might be one hiding somewhere.""I'm going to look around inside, a bit, you want to join me?" Josef says, "Looking for cubbyholes and wasted spaces, like behind access covers and in crawlspaces, places like that. There's always a use for a nice hidden space."
"Best places to look are usually in the overhead in cargo spaces and in the walls of Engineering. That's where you usually find little spaces that aren't being used for anything." Josef says as they stroll along him craning his neck up to the overhead and looking around the walls of the cargo bay, "They have the bulkheads off the engine bays back in Engineering. Now's a good time to look in there and see if their are maintenance spaces behind what eventually will become solid walls again"

The Engineering spaces are well laid out and look like they'll be easy to work in. There are several terminals: one with the power plant, another in the J-drive section, a third at the M-drive, and a fourth...looks like the main one at a central control section. The chairs, on the other hand, are not to his liking, he'd like to have them replaced with those used on the DE Victor Class seats or something similar. Casca also notes that there are several access hatches leading to what are probably maintenance areas between the inner bulkheads and the outer hull. Access between the Port and Starboard Engineering spaces is via an enclosed corridors that pass above and below the cargo hold. They are low, but fairly wide and are closed with pressure doors. There could be trouble if there aren't airlocks behind those pressure doors. The clamshell opens wide, so you can get a Ship's Boat, probably something bigger, through them. You'd have to do some measuring, but you think a small ship, maybe up to 200 tons could go through them and fit in the cargo hold...maybe. The attachment for the Boat up top is standard, but the attachment between the Boat and the ship's airlock up there is NOT. The airlock is larger than normal and there are four hatches into the airlock. One going up to whatever is attached up top, but it looks like it is a flexible attachment to accommodate vehicles of various sizes and positions of the airlocks on them. One leads aft and opens into a short corridor meets a T corridor that branches Port and starboard to ladders that go down into the aft wheel wells where there appear to be small air locks giving access to outside the ship. The third is the one he used to get up from the ladder into the airlock. The fourth opens into a 10 x 8 foot rectangular area where a lift should be, but at the moment it appears to just be an empty space wit a floor welded into place where the lift should be. As Casca is climbing back down from the Ship's Boat attachment he sees a pair of figures down in the Cargo Bay. A human that was at the meeting but didn't say anything and Ekhunoz the Vargr looking around the hold. The human spies him on the ladder and waves calling out a greeting and a question, "Hey! What's it look like up there? Is the only access a ladder or is there a lift, too?"
"Getting up and down a ladder with gear, or injuried troopers is a PITA!" the man says, "A lift shaft without a lift would be a good hidey hole, but I'd rather have a lift, myself.""My name's Jo. Josef Stalin Hinkle, and I think you were sitting on the crew side of the table at the meeting, so maybe you already know Ekhunoz, here." Jo says smiling, "Didn't you say you were an Engineer and boat driver at the meeting?"/font]

Terry MixonPeng wanders around the ship, poking his nose in here and there, but largely remaining silent and unobtrusive. When he spots Charlie alone, he sidles up and comments: "Cap, maybe I missed something in the briefin', but I can't say as I can figure out what those frames 'round the hardpoints are 'sposed to be. An' it might be a good idea to let the techies . . ."At this point Peng pauses to nod at the workers scurrying about all over. ". . . that it would be right nice if - before they put all those plates back on - that they make sure that all four 'points can be fire-linked so as to be controlled from any of the others, as well as from the bridge. If'n we get in a fix where some or all of the gunners are needed off ship, it's be nice to still be able to use ALL the ship's bang-bang, ya know?"

I think the frames are for weapon concealment mounting. As for the wiring, good idea. You know what you need and want, so go tell them. I’ll be checking out the bridge.” Charlie will go check out the bridge.

Then he scans the swarming throng of techs, trying to pick out someone who seems to be in charge. As he scans, Peng mutters to himself, "No sense wastin' time talkin' to a min-yon, only to be sent on up the line . . ."

When the woman chooses to notice his presence, Peng says politely, "Ma'am, I'm Peng Silva and I'm gonna be senior gunner on this here boat."After nodding casually toward the craft in question, he continues, "I realize yor busy, but could I have just a tick of yor time?"Assuming the woman grants Peng's request, he'll inform her of his thinking regarding hard-linking the turrets. ********************************************************* OOC: "Hard-linking" is connecting systems via dedicated hardware links. "Soft-linking" - which is what Peng previously did with the Clear Sails' turrets - is connecting systems via configurable software. Peng prefers the former over the latter, as he's found that hard links are much less likely to be compromised by enemy action.

"That's the way the Navy does it," she says with a stony expression, "Mr. Silva. That's the way it'll be done on this ship. You'll have your hard link to fire control with a redundant line to a station on the Bridge and a back up third level soft link through normal channels."
She smiles slightly holding her finger to keep her place on the schematics on her desk, "Does that suit you Mr. Silva?"
"Anything else, Mr. Silva?"

"Does that suit you Mr. Silva?" "Perfectly, ma'am." Peng answers, unconsciously straightening a bit and also pulling his shoulders back. "Anything else, Mr. Silva?" "Not right now, ma'am." Peng replies. Assuming he's been dismissed, Peng begins to turn away but then turns back with: "Might find summat to ask later, ma'am. Dependin'."Unless the supervisor says something to halt his departure, Peng tosses off a rather-crisper-normal salute, then heads off to check the work being done. He makes sure to stay back out of the way as much as possible while doing this.

You'll be aboard her going in harms way, we're not, so I don't begrudge your input...about serious things."

The bridge has five workstations, generally labeled as: Pilot, Navigator, Sensors/Comm, Gunnery/Engineering, and a Captain's station. However, any station can perform any of the functions and can be set to default to a configuration for whoever is sitting there and using it.
