Hello, everyone. Captain Crumbcake here. aka Oldkat, Professor Thork and various other things folks call me.
I hope any ill associations you may have with me in the past on other forums can be set aside, as I am earnestly trying to abide by a serious standard nowadays--for the most part.
I won't bore everyone with a bio, or any of that stuff. This Campaign folder is about The Lost Lands... And I want to keep it that way.
But, I would like to preface future posting of materials by saying that I have been trying to incorporate the original rules (and supplements I&II)into my own frame of mind for some time. And I think I've reached the place where things are starting to click. I'm very much of the school that believes in drawing inspirations and information from other sources as well, and yet keep the basic framework of OD&D intact as the driving engine of my campaign-world.
For openers, I'm going to post the background file for T.L.L. and a couple of maps. The text is sparse but gives an overview of the world as it stands at the moment. The maps show the world both before and after the cataclysm.
Feel free to begin threads of discussion, or Q&A.
BACKGROUND
The Lands is populated with scattered bands of men and monsters. A once great continent was fragmented into smaller bodies separated by miles of sea water; the result of a cataclysm when the uncontrolled power of magic was unleashed in a final attempt to defeat invading monster hordes threatening human existence. So catastrophic was the upheaval that those attempting to wield the power were smote along with their enemies, destroying most of civilization as it was known, and separating the races of men, dwarves, gnomes and elves.
Now, 2000 years after the cataclysm, only a handful of the eldest elves can recall bits and pieces of the times before the great maelstrom that caused the changing of the world. What magic existed has waned over time, until its power and use are no longer accessible. Even the divine favor of the gods has been withdrawn; so disappointed were they that their clerical representatives did nothing to stop the wars.
Legends and myths of magic wielding humans and elves are but the stuff of idle talk around the tavern table. Stories of plate covered knights and warriors swinging enchanted weapons in battle against giants and dragons are mentioned only with a grin and wink among disbelievers. Nothing is remembered of the once great artifacts given to the peoples by the gods; only the wisest elder sages are aware that such things existed, as found in the fading scrolls of secret libraries within the tombs of kings.
But the reality of the present threat from bands of raiding beasts is not a rumor, or gossip. Though separated by high mountain ranges, great canyon crevasses and thick jungle forests, the degenerate races of humanoids that survived the great cataclysm have multiplied, and grown stronger, over the centuries. Driven by their inherent, insatiable lust for revenge, more and more of them have launched expeditions, seeking ways across or through the natural barriers that still serve to protect the race of men in hopes of final restitution.
