Oldkat's thread over at proboards 74 certainly qualifies for analysis, here.
Wolves, dire wolves and worgs. (edited out this erroneous stuff, as it was corrected below by Waysoftheearth.) So what's everyone's take on this? Why do you think the creature wasn't fully statted and given description blocks until 1977, and the AD&D Monster Manual?

All from memory, but I am pretty sure Giant Wolves and Worgs (can't recall precise spelling, but I think that is it) appear and get stats in the Chainmail fantasty supplement.
Wolves are mentioned, and given some stats, in M&T under the heading "Animals". IIRC wolves get 1 HD and AC 7. Their movement rate can be taken directly from CM. I can't recall off the top of my head where I got the Numbers Appearing stats for Wolves in DD... I'll look that up in my notes tonight and get back to you.

Looking at my M&T under INSECTS OR SMALL ANIMALS I see wolves, with 1HD, AC8. So I guess these are sorta included. But they didn't get the full treatment of an official monster/creature, which is listed in the table and statted out. Okay, on 'wolves' I'm nitpicking I guess. Dire wolves and worgs though....

So my reference for Wolves were:
M&T p9: Giants can have 6-36 wolves at their castles, M&T p16: Dwarves can have domesticated wolves, M&T p20: Small Animals include wolves; 1HD AC8.
Chainmail talks about Giant Wolves which includes Dire Wolves (which are a large, extinct variety of wolf) and Wargs (a more fantastic creature). They move as medium horse (18") or heavy horse (12") if mounted (e.g., by Goblins).
So from this we can possibly presume Wolf stats like: MV 18", AC 8, HD 1, 6-36 appearing.
Giant Wolves are said (in CM) to attack as Light Horse. One might, speculatively, note that M&T gives a light horse 2 HD, and also that CM remarks a Giant Wolf fights as two Men against fantastic foes.

Greyhawk also mentions wolves several times, including: p18 (re: Attacks and Damage by Monster Type) Wolf 1 bite 1-6/bite Dire Wolf 1 bite 1-8/bite p51 (re: Bag of Tricks) Wolf AC 7 1-6 damage 2 HD p57 (re: Onyx Dog) "treat as a regular wolf for attack/defense 2-8 hit points"
