I also have a great love for the Barsoom series and hold it equal to the Tarzan series, I cannot choose between them. This series also started in 1912.
A Princess of Mars The Gods of Mars The Warlord of Mars Thuvia, Maid of Mars The Chessmen of Mars The Master Mind of Mars A Fighting Man of Mars Swords of Mars Synthetic Men of Mars Llana of Gathol John Carter of Mars (This book was published in 1964 and consists of a real ERB story "Skeleton Men of Jupiter" 1942 which was to include a collection of stories that were never written and a substandard tale written by the son - John Coleman Burroughs "John Carter and the Giant of Mars")
I first discovered these books when I was 12 and was immediately hooked and I wish that he could have written many more (and have kept his son away from pen and paper).
John Carter of Mars is a fantastic character and Dejah Thoris is his equal, great books.

It's still my favourite out of the ERB series. Although I prefer the more limited but more developed palette of races in Pellucidar, Barsoom just has more rousing adventures.

Barsoom is my favorite of the Burroughs series, but I must confess that I never made it though the Tarzan books. The notable exception, of course, being the final "John Carter of Mars" book which is mostly terrible. I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed the John Carter movie and wish they would hire the same acting crew for a sequel, although I seem to recall reading somewhere that they might do a reboot instead.

I loved the movie. Really loved the movie. I only had two real quibbles and that was that John Carter was supposed to be a master swordsman before he got there and that I wish they would just follow the books and when those are done then feel free to write new stories. On another point, Lynn Collins absolutely looks exactly like I have always pictured Dejah Thoris. On the other hand Taylor Kitsch is nothing like I picture John Carter, Chris Pratt would be closer to how I picture him.

I don't think I knew who Chris Pratt was when the JC movie came out, but after seeing Guardians of the Galaxy I have to agree that he would make a great John Carter.

People might find the book "John Carter and the Gods of hollywood" interesting. I read some commentary on that and it seems to be spot on.

If the novel is too slow reading for you, the ERB site is running a regular comic strip by a familiar face.
